hard practice fields/enthusiasm

i have a couple of things to ask....i guess it could be two topics.

1. i was wondering what schools do to prevent the ground from being too hard.

what can schools do after the ground is already too hard?

also, do some people like hard ground to make the kids tougher?

2. what can coaches do to help keep the players entusiasm up? enthusiasm can spread, but how do you get it started?

any suggestions.
