3aFan, I'm not sure if it was a big upset
I think RC is a little better than most folks think, but that's a good thing. Tonight was a great game which went down to the final minute with RC defense preserving the win.

Who let the Dogs out?

Royse City - 20, Gainesville - 17

ROYSE CITY – A week after Royse City quarterbakc James Mapps rushed for a school record 350 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, it was a kneel down for minus two yards that might have been his most significant carry of the season.

Mapps engineered two late touchdown drives, and his defense did the rest, as Royse City shocked defending Class 3A Division 1 champion Gainesville in a 20-17 homecoming victory at Bulldog Stadium.

"This is so huge for our program," said Mapps, who finished with 131 yards and two touchdowns. "I didn't think anything could top last week, but this definitely did."

Gainesville running back Terrius Purvey was still feeling the effects of an ankle injury suffered last week. Purvey, considered one of the top running back prospects in the state, saw only limited action and was held to two yards on six carries.

His understudy, Jerome Hewitt, filled in nicely, though, with 154 yards on 15 carries and two touchdowns, the second of which gave his team a 17-7 lead.

Royse City's rushing attack began to wear down Gainesville in the fourth quarter. Mapps scored on a 1-yard run to cut the lead to 17-13 with 6:54 to play.

Royse City (3-2) surprised Gainesville (2-2) with an onside kick that was recovered by Mickey Mojica at the Gainesville 41 yard line.

"Our kicking game is horrible, and they had a bunch of land sharks back there, so we figured 'Why not?' because they were probably going to return the ball to the fifty anyway," second year Royse City coach Rodney Webb said.

Royse City took the lead on Cameron Holliness' 5-yard touchdown run with 3:20 to play. Royse City tried another onside kick, but the ball spun backward off the foot of Ryan Bradley, and Gainesville took over at the Royse City 34 yard line.

The Royse City defense held on first and second down, and Gainesville quarterback Travis Sutton's third down throw to Hewitt was ruled out of the back of the end zone, to the displeasure of the Gainesville sideline, which was assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The flag proved to be costly when Steven Arenas' 49-yard field goal was short and wide left.

"Since I've been here, we've only beaten teams that we should have beaten," Webb said. "So, to knock off a team as talented as Gainesville, it's really special. I don't think I'll sleep tonight."

Purvey barely played, that had alot to do with it i'm sure.. but good win by Royse City.. Gainesville has alot of work to do, and Purvey has to get healthy for this team to be succesful or else this could be a long season
