Have the MD telethon on and just watched Gary Lewis perform a couple of their old songs. Still got it after all these years!

Believe the original group was known as Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Second song was "This Diamond Ring". For the moment, I've forgotten the name of the first song they just did, but it was a very familiar song back in the sixties.
(Sounded a lot like the Beach Boys songs).

6 (Billboard Hit No.9). . . "Sure Gonna Miss Her" - 3/5/66
7 (Billboard Hit No.8). . . "Green Grass" - 5/14/66
8 (Billboard Hit No.13). . . "My Heart's a Symphony" - 7/30/66
9 (Billboard Hit No.15). . "You Don't Have to Paint Me a Picture" - 10/8/66
10 (Billboard Hit No.21). . . "Where Will the Words Come From" - 12/17/67
11 (Billboard Hit No.39). . . "Girl's in Love" - 3/11/67

Hey Sinton 66 a while ago I saw where Fox sports was going to televise the World Softball League Championship and I turned it on looking forward to some women's softball and it turned out it was men playing softball! :( I was so upset. Now don't get me wrong I like men's baseball but I was so disappointed that it wasn't the women's softball that I turned the set off and walked away in disgush as my wife laughed at my disappointment. frown

Heh, heh, all you young guys just don't know what you missed by not growing up in the sixties. Great music, great summers of surfing, partying, and dancing to LIVE bands instead of listening to some dude scratching records and talking instead of singing. wink

Hey...I was almost out of high school by the time hip hop really took off with all the negative crap that has been going on. The LA riots happened the month before I graduated. At least I didn't spend my whole childhood listening to it and wearing 36x30 jeans when I was 8. :D The 80's weren't too bad a decade, though, and most of the music was tolerable.

Oh no, my jeans were 28x34 back then. Don't want to talk about what they are now!!!! :D

Hehe...it happens to the best of us. By the way...that was in reference to kids wearing jeans to their knees and using a belt. I never quite figured that out.

Ranger Mom, I assure you, you would have loved the sixties too. 'Course, I guess you'll have to take my word for that. wink

I went into the Navy in 1968, and was stationed at Treasure Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay for about a year and a half going to Electronics school. I had the opportunity to see live performances by some of the best groups in the field of pop music. Almost every weekend, I would get to the Fillmore Auditorium early enough to get a seat on the floor right in front of the stage. I literally sat six feet from some of the best bands in the world.

Anybody just see the runner-up from American Idol on the telethon? Clay something? I didn't watch the Idol show, so this was the first time I've heard him. He just did a rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water". All I can think of to say is HOLY SMOKES, BATMAN!, that boy can SING!!!!

Had forgotten all about Gary Lewis and the Playboys (tells you how old I am), reading the list of the songs was almost as good as listening to 'em. Sinton66, I've respected your football savvy and style for a few years, now I respect your music experiences, too. Lucky you!

No offense to him...and I think what he's doing today and his talents are admirable, but the that's the only song I've ever heard of the guy singing. Obviously, I didn't follow American Idol, but Clay...buddy...pick a different song!

Wow! Thanks Brahma Mom. The groups I've seen perform read like a who's who of Rock music. They would include:

Eric Burden and War (not the Animals)
Cream (Eric Clapton)
Led Zeppelin (1st live performance in the US)
Big Brother and the Holding Company (Janis Joplin)
Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane(later starship)
B.B. King
Country Joe and the Fish
Joe Cocker
The Grateful Dead
Santana
Sir Douglas Quintet
Marshall Tucker Band
Steve Miller Band
Creedance Clearwater(1st performance- San Diego)
Golliwogs (Pre-Creedance, night clubs around S.F.)
Grand Funk Railroad
Strawberry Alarm Clock
Buffalo Springfield (Buddy from Sinton subbed as drummer for a while)
Paul Revere and the Raiders
Deep Purple
The Rolling Stones
Guess Who
The Grass Roots
Jeff Beck
Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young
Iron Butterfly
Jethro Tull

Too many to remember them all. GEEZ, No wonder I stayed BROKE all the time. wink

Post Script note: I apologize if this sounds like I'm bragging, that wasn't my intention. Gary Lewis just stirred up old memories.

Clay Aiken had my vote the entire series. I didn't like alot of the songs he sang - too many ballads, but he can DEFINITLEY sing!!
