Manor doesn't last long at top of 3A heap
Liberty Hill takes out Mustangs with 63-50 victory.

LIBERTY HILL — On the shoulders of a relentless ground attack that all but left tread marks on the backs of defenders, Liberty Hill dismantled Manor, the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A, 63-50 Friday night at Panther Stadium.

The Panthers scored touchdowns on all but two of their possessions, once when they were forced to punt in the fourth quarter, and then after driving once more to the Mustangs' doorstep, where they knelt on the ball to end the game.

With the loss, Manor became the fourth consecutive team this year to lose its first game after rising to the No. 1 ranking in 3A.

One week after rushing for 729 yards against Hutto, Liberty Hill running backs Ryan Lawhorn, Casey Kociuba and Matt Escamilla combined for 605 yards on the ground.

Lawhorn led the way with 239 yards and four touchdowns, Kociuba ran for 233 yards and two scores on the ground, and in the final seconds of the first half, he caught a 24-yard touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone to give the Panthers a 42-28 lead going into halftime. It was Liberty Hill's only completion of the game, in just three attempts.

In an electrifying offensive contest, Manor did its best to keep pace.

Mustangs quarterback Curtis Williams was perhaps the most dangerous single player on the field, completing 23 of 36 passes for 436 yards and six touchdowns, while rushing for 66 yards on eight carries. And in the third quarter, he made the game's most astonishing play. After being flushed out of the pocket, he took off towards the right sideline, beat two defenders to the corner and outraced the entire defense 23 yards down the sideline before leaping over a defender into the end zone.

But Williams also threw two interceptions, and in a game where touchdowns felt less like a breakthrough and more like holding serve, they proved costly. Meanwhile, in 71 running plays from scrimmage, the Panthers never fumbled.

But for all the scoring in the game, the Panther defense remained stout at the biggest moments. Leading 49-35 with 1:30 to play in the third quarter, Liberty Hill's front line stuffed Williams on a quarterback sneak on fourth-and-goal.

After Williams connected with wide receiver Sharrad Davis on a 32-yard touchdown with 10:19 to go, Liberty Hill put the game away with a 13-play, 90-yard drive that took 6:15 off the clock. Lawhorn capped the drive, running neearly untouched off the left tackle for a 23-yard touchdown run.

Liberty Hill scored touchdowns on all six of its possessions in the first two quarters, and rolled up 375 rushing yards before halftime. The Panthers' Wing-T misdirection had Manor on its heels all game, as Kociuba went outside, Lawhorn inside and Escamilla everywhere else.

Aided by outstanding line blocking, the three backs slashed, barreled and cut through the Manor defense, breaking tackles on nearly every run. In the first half, the three backs averaged more than 10 yards per carry, and were stopped for fewer than four yards on just seven plays.

While Fox Sports Net Southwest television crews were profiling Manor vs. Liberty Hill as the game of he week in the state, few players could muster the energy to be excited about the media attention.

"Do you want to go talk to the television cameras?" Vance asked his players after the game. In the crowd, one player responded, "I want to go home."
