Trinity Explodes in Second Quarter to Beat Austin College

San Antonio - The Trinity football team scored 24 points in the second period en route to a 52-10 victory over Austin College in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night at E.M. Stevens Field.

Trinity (1-0) led 31-3 at the half, and had pulled most of its starting players less than five minutes into the third quarter. The offense racked up 370 total yards - 241 of which came in the first half. The defense also got a piece of the scoring action with a fumble recovery in the endzone to start the fourth quarter.

Austin College (0-1) answered a first-quarter touchdown by Trinity with a 37-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3, but didn't manage another score until late in the fourth quarter. The Kangaroos finished with 143 total yards of offense, and committed two turnovers.

The Tigers scored that first touchdown after a fumble by the Kangaroos on the game's first drive. Trinity took two plays to score, as Jerrold Jones scampered in for the opening score of the 2004 season. Trinity's only turnover of the game gave Austin a short field, which they turned into to three points on the board.

Jerrold Jones highlighted the offense for the Tigers with 117 yards on seven carries, scoring three touchdowns in the process. Quarterback Dan DesPlaines had an efficient game, garnering a QB rating of over 196. He completed 12-15 passes for 153 yards and two scores, throwing one interception.

Robert Kelner also had a big game with three receptions for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Kelner scored both of his touchdowns in a span of 1:03 as the second quarter wound to a close. Additionally, Kelner returned six punts for 114 yards - an average of 19 yards per return.

Anthony Hicks had four receptions for 51 yards, while Ray Valencia also had three catches and a touchdown.

Neal Ewing rushed for 79 yards and a touchown to lead the Kangaroo offense, while Brian Womack combined for 82 yards of total offense. Ross Reedy led the team with four receptions for 22 yards.

Michael Steer led the Tiger Black Flag with eight tackles in the game, while lineman Reid Jonkers recorded two sacks among his three tackles. The defensive unit recorded 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage, caused two turnovers, scored a touchdown, and had four sacks.

Caleb Bynum led all players with nine stops for Austin College, while defensive back Matt Reed had five tackles to go with two pass breakups and an interception.

Trinity will face Texas Lutheran University next weekend in Seguin, Texas, while Austin College begins American Southwest Conference play against McMurry University in two weeks.

Savages' Beard, Cuva Earned LSC North Weekly Honors
Posted: September 5, 2004

DURANT, Okla. – Southeastern Oklahoma senior quarterback Drew Beard and sophomore punter/kicker Pete Cuva have been named the Lone Star Conference North Division Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, after the Savages’ season-opening 45-21 romp of Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday.

Beard, a 5-10, 175-pound native of Rush Springs, Okla., set both the Southeastern and the LSC single-game record for total offense with 526 yards in the victory. He passed for 295 yards completing 13-of-22 passes with three scores. That would have been sufficient in most cases. However, Beard tacked on the fifth-highest single-game rushing total in SOSU history, and best by a quarterback, with 231 yards on just 13 carries and two more scores.

Beard’s 526 yards surpassed the LSC single-game mark of 517 yards held by Luke Collins of the University of Central Oklahoma against Harding University in 1999. The previous SOSU single-game best of 496 yards was recorded by Troy Taylor, the school’s all-time leading passer, against Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 1985. This is the eighth time in 21 games that Beard has earned the LSC’s weekly honor.

Cuva, a 6-1, 190, earned the recognition in his debut with the Savages. Cuva went 6-for-6 in PATs against the Greyhounds and connected on a 28-yard field goal. He also averaged 40.0 yards per punt placing all three of his kicks inside the ENMU 20-yard line.
