And from all I read and saw, it seemed the US competitors were always in hostile surroundings. Very little crowd support for them which makes their accomplishments that much better. Saw one sportswriter comment that the reason we, the Russians and the Chinese do so well is that we are not a nation of wimps like many nations have turned into. We still believe in competition and working hard unlike more and more of the world which is increasingly "sissified".

That sportswriter is an idiot and a jerk. Size, resources, and established programs pretty well explain the medal count for various nations.
