FAIRFIELD -- Fairfield senior quarterback David Skinner had hoped to earn a warm welcome in his debut as the Eagles' starting quarterback Friday night. Visiting opponent Cameron Yoe, however, would extend no such courtesy.

The Yoemen defense pestered the rookie quarterback all night and their offense reaped the benefits, shutting out favored Fairfield 31-0 at Eagle Field.

"They're obviously a good football team," Fairfield head coach David Armstrong said of the Yoemen, who were ranked No. 93 in 3A by the Harris Ratings System, well behind No. 43 Fairfield. "We knew they'd be tough going into it."

But perhaps not as tough as they proved to be. Cameron Yoe's defensive front -- led by senior end Shane Ewing -- sacked Skinner four times and forced him to fumble six times with plenty of hurries. When the dust cleared, Skinner was 1 of 9 passing for 7 yards with one interception.

"I had the mindset coming into it that we might (dominate)," Cameron Yoe head coach Mike Mullins said. "I can't say enough about our defense and how good they played tonight."

The Yoemen defense was complemented with a deadly offense that used the no-huddle spread to wear down the Eagles' defense.
The first blow came early in the first quarter, as Yoemen quarterback Ryan Mullins found wide-open running back T.J. Olivarri for a 43-yard touchdown strike past defender Jose Gallegos. Although wideout Ryan Mikulec fumbled on the two-point conversion attempt, he was able to gather it on the run and make the score 8-0.

The standout quarterback wouldn't let up, dotting the field with completions before finding wideout Curtis Hoyle on a slant for a 30-yard score with 11:00 in the second quarter.

Mullins would throw no more touchdowns, but he didn't need to. After Mikulec pounded a 29-yard field goal in the third, Cameron's Darius Johnson picked off a Skinner pass in the fourth and returned it 29 yards for a touchdown. With just three seconds remaining in the game, backup tailback Shane Taylor rubbed salt in the wound with a 39-yard TD scamper straight up the gut.

"Offensively, we had a chance to put more up on the board, but we didn't do it," Coach Mullins said.

Mullins' son led the attack with a 15-for-27, 135-yard, two-touchdown effort. He also led the team in rushing with 59 yards.

Senior running back Kyle Lightsey was the most consistent Eagle player, rushing for 50 yards on nine attempts.

Senior punter Weldon Alexander had almost as much trouble as Skinner. He was forced to run three of his would-be punts because of the swarming Yoemen, and had one punt blocked deep in Fairfield territory.

Penalties also hurt the Eagles, who were flagged eight times for 68 yards.

"They made too many mistakes, too many turnovers and too many costly penalties," Armstrong said. "It's hard to win football games when you make those kind of mistakes."

Fairfield will try to rebound from its mishaps next week at Connally.

"We gotta get after it," Armstrong said. "We've gotta start playing hard."

Congratulations to the Cameron Yoeman. They came to Fairfield with something to prove...and thats that they aren't the same unit from last years 1-9 team. Great offensive blockers up front in run and pass blocking. Mullins at QB was a master at running the option out of the shotgun. Fairfield being strong between the tackles and Cameron showing they have the quickness to take it to the outside in a hurry. Cameron started the game with deep strikes to wide open receivers. Thank goodness they quit throwing the deep stuff and went to the short stop routes or their scoring might have doubled.
The Yoe defensive front stuffed the line of scrimmage all night long. The Eagle QB Skinner had a little success running the draw and TB Lightsey had a few impressive runs, but the Yoeman shut everything else down for the most part. The passing game was limited to just one reception with misfires by Skinner and drops by receivers.
The game this week between Fairfield and Connally ought to be pretty interesting with 2 potentially good teams getting blown out in their 1st outing. Both coaching staffs may be making some noticeable changes this week to improve their squads.
