Great book, its setting right by me here on my desk. I have been trying to re-read it before the movie comes out. Coach Gaines is the head football coach here at ACU.

the book makes him out to kind of be a bad guy in my opinion but i think he is a great coach and a nice man

He really is a nice guy....I didnt care for the parts of the book that made Odessa out to be a bunch of racist rednecks. My fav. parts are the stories about the games, especially the Carter game, and the coin toss.

I starting reading the book last summer and still haven't finished it...

I guess I need to seeing how the movie will be out in October (I think that's when it is)...

Ugh don't mention books.... We have 6 novels for American lit. I have until monday at 10a.m. to read 150 pages in the first one. Then Ill have about 2 days to finish it off after that. College classes, gotta love 'em

Just remember that a good deal of that book is a work of fiction. Ol' Buzz came down here looking to write a controversial book, and he exaggerated quite a bit to do it.

You know, I'm reading it now as well and I suspected he enhanced the old 'red neck' sterotypes with all those bald racial references. It is impossible for a writer from the north to give a fair picture of southern culture I guess. Apart from that, it does resonate with the whole football culture in west Texas. A good read for that reason alone.

You need to consider changing your attitude towards this. Try not to view the reading as work. You are in college because you have made a concientious decision to improve your mind. Forget about the degrees, grades and all the peripheral issues of school and try to appreciate the many great things that you will encounter. Read those books to understand what the writer means. When will you have such an opportunity again? After college comes the real world and it is a lot harsher out there believe me on this. Good luck. Savor it, don't waste it.

Great book to start with. It was probably the first "real" book I read as well. You'll love it.

I recommend "Bleachers" as well, very easy to read, and pretty short.

If you're into non-sport books, "The DaVinci Code" and "Angels and Demons" will blow your mind.
