Leopards Scrimmage Frisco Centennial

The Gainesville Leopards had their final tuneup before starting the 2004 season when they scrimmaged the Frisco Centennial Titans Friday at Leeper Stadium.

The Leopards look sluggish at times but still managed to outscore the Class 4A Titans.

In the controlled part of the scrimmage, the Leopards scored once. Gainesville took the ball down the field thanks to several nice runs from Terrius Purvey. He had runs of 9,8, 23 and 19 yards on the drive. Jerome Hewitt got the bal into the end zone on a 7-yard run. Gainesville then moved the ball back into Titan territory on a 23-yard run by Purvey, but a fumble ended that drive.

Gainesville's second team offense then got a 55-yard run from quarterback Michael Miller. Later, Travis Sutton hooked up wth Jeremy Allen on a 40-yard pass that was brought back by a holding penalty.

The two teams then played a timed half. On Gainesville's first offensive possession, Sutton threw a swing pass that Purvey turned into a 46-yard gain. Later, Sutton hit DaRon Calhoun on a 37-yard TD pass that was brought back by a penalty.

After punts by both teams, Gainesville scored on a 45-yard run by Purvey. Steven Arenas added the extra point kick to make it 7-0. Centennial came right back and drove the ball 70 yards for a score. They got a touchdown when their quarterback fumbled into the end zone and another Titan fell on the ball. That tied things up at 7-7. They had another chane to score on their next possession, but their field goal attempt went wide.

Gainesville couldn't score on their next possesion, but their defense put points on the board on back-to-back Frisco possessons. Jeremy Allen intercepted a Titan pass and returned it 15 yards for one score. Arenas' kick made it 14-7.

The next time Centennial had the ball, Hewitt picked off a pass and returned it 45 yards for another score. A penalty moved the Leopards back on the extra point and Arenas' kick went wide to make it 20-7. That is how things would end.

Just shaking out the rust, I'm assuming.

Good job.
