Record Editor - Cuero Gobbler Head Coach Mark Reeve found plenty to brag about following Saturday’s scrimmages with Lockhart here.
All three of the high school teams outscored their 4A opponents in their first competition of the season.
The varsity collected five touchdowns while keeping Lockhart out of the endzone. The JV had a 4-0 win and the Freshmen were 5-1 winners.
“Our quarterbacks threw well and our secondary played extremely well,” said Coach Reeve. “And our offensive line is where we thought it would be, one of our strongest points.”
Allowing only one score in the scrimmages, the Gobbler defenses also earned praise.
“At this point I’m pretty pleased with where we are. The key for us is can we get to that next level next week and the next week,” he said. “That’s what its all about if we are going to have a championship team.”
Varsity’s first score was a 35-yard pass from Matt Schumacher to Jeremy Ross. The second was a 70-yard pass from Schumacher to Latrael Cooper.
The third score came on a 35-yard bootleg run by Kyle Noack. Nick Taylor scored the fourth TD on a 45-yard pop-sweep play.
Noack connected with Domingo Ruiz on a 70-yard TD pass for the final score.
“Execution-wise we are ready to play,” noted Reeve, “but condition-wise we’re not. We have to concentrate on the little things. We definitely have a lot of room for improvement.”
Reeve noted his running-backs played well which included Cooper, Dewone Williams, Fabian Olguin, Bradley Bomba and Larvell Roy. He also recognized the squad’s quarterbacks Schumacher, Brent Jemelka and Noack and their passing in the scrimmage. “The better we can throw, the better we can run,” he stated.
On Friday Cuero will travel to Gregory Portland for its second and final scrimmage. Freshmen will play at 5 p.m., JV at 6 and Varsity at 7.
The Wildcats are pegged to win their district, 31-4A, this season. They went 9-4 last year and were regional finalist. They are returning nine offensive and eight defensive starters from that team.
Gregory-Portland is currently ranked fourth in Class 4A.
