I know this is a football board, but since I am new to 3A, who are the state basketball powerhouses that my Wildcats will have to face in the playoffs?

Would also like to know about golf. I know, I know, golf sucks, but Palestine was a 4A powerhouse, its good to not have Highland Park to deal with anymore.

Manor has been undefeated in district the last two years running. They should again run the table.

Can you say, reading comprehension. I asked who the powerhouses were in 3A, I did not say Palestine had been a 4A powerhouse (even though they have been in and out of the state rankings for the last 20 years, and have made 16 playoff appearances in the last 20 years)

Okay Okay, assuming they make the playoffs, who are the best 3A teams in the state from year to year (whick is really what I have been trying to ask)? I know Palestine beat Midland Greenwood last year, how would they stack up against the better teams last year?

Right now Kountze has to be considered the main powerhouse in all of 3A considering how they rolled to the title last year!

Also in 21-3A, are any of these teams extremly good or extremly bad:

Crockett, Diboll, Huntington, Lufkin Hudson, Palestine Westwood, Pollack Central, Rusk

We will see about that, lol. We have been very successful in 4A against East Texas schools for the last 20 years, but always gets us is when we get a couple of rounds into the playoffs and have to face those Dallas ISD schools. Status quo for Palestine in the last 2 decades has been ususally around a 25-7 season and about 2 rounds into the playoffs, I am hoping the drop in class will help.

Only team we just can't seem to beat is Nacogdoches, we went 16-4 in district over the last 2 years, all 4 losses were to Nac.

Can't help who you play in tournaments. That said, Normangee did beat a lot of 3A, 4A, and 5A schools last year.

Gainesville Basketball

State Champions - 2002
State Finalist - 2000
State Semi-Finalist - 2001, 2004

Region II Champions - 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004
Region II Finalists - 1998
Region II Semi-Finalists - 1999, 2003

District Champions - 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004

(Note - This only goes back the last few years that I can remember that has to do with my years in high school--1996-2000. I'm definitely positive that the numbers get deeper.)

Also - When Gainesville was 4A, we still went to the playoffs several times and even won district once I think.

So, im 21-3A we are looking at Palestine and Diboll to be the favorite, who else is in the running for a playoff spot? Crockett? Hudson?

mwynn05
08-10-2004, 03:55 PM
no diboll and crockett are the favorites. crockett will likely be very strong this year

Very true, Crockett plays a very fast pace, aggressive style and they usually get away with murder up there. Palestine used to play the same aggressive style, not sure if they still do. Crockett's success is usually determined what kinda game the officials call. My senior year, Palestine played Crockett in the finals of the Crockett Tournament and beat them by 30 (officials were calling it close), then the following weekend the 2 teams met in the semifinals at the Loveland Tournament and Crockett got a layup at the buzzer to win by 1 (in that game they were letting anything go). That year we were in a district with Athens, Corsicana, Ennis, Kaufman, Lancaster, Terrell, and Wilmer-Hutchins. You could tell a huge difference in the officials calling the game when you go to the inner-city type schools (lancaster and wilmer) as opposed to the way it was called in palestine and athens. But one thing about Crockett, even if you beat them, they make you earn it.

That's right, Gainesville did make state in the early 90's. I was too young to remember that though...I think I was 9 or 10 when that happened.
