Don't know if any of you will even remember this, but back in the late 80's or so, the La Vega Pirates (Waco) had a team slogan called "MODOC". It was almost a mythical thing that nobody seemed to know what it stood for except those on or involved with the team. I remember reading in the paper about how secretive the thing was.

Just wondering if that can now be declassified... Any La Vega folks out there who know what MODOC was all about?

The term "Modoc" was used as a motivational tactic by Coach Carlous Stone in the late 1980's. He supposedly told stories of brave Indian tribes who roamed the Central Texas area in the 1800's. If memory serves. they used to give tomahawks as helmet decals instead of stars. What this has to do with Pirates I will never know, but it lasted for several years. Several area coaches researched it and found that Modoc as indeed a tribe, but in Northern California and Oregon. It made for a good story but has little or no local meaning to it.
