my football buddies got in a conversation on this so I thought I would throw it out on the board which would you rather have 1st and 10 from the 11 or 1st and Goal from the 9

1st and 10 on the 11, that gives you 4 for chances to score.

You have less room to pass from the 9 compared to the 11...

Plus, it's is possible to get 8 downs (maybe more with pentalties etc..., don't feel like thinking that hard right now)...

1st and 10 from the 11, because it causes for more thinking on the defensive coordinators part as to if the other team will pass or run, and the 8 downs thing...

1st and goal from the nine you only have 4 downs to score. Defense has the advantage most of the time in defending a smaller area against the pass. a power running game is the way to go.

give me first and goal...chances are you wont get the first down...and you have two less yards to go. you are usually running within 15 yards...so that two yards is very important.

it depends.....a team like say Burnet or China Spring who runs the spread I'd rather have 1st and 10 from the 11...a lil more room to operate for the passing game..if I was say Everman or Kennedale a power running team give me 1st and Goal from the 9....

i would say 1st and goal from the 9 because 2 yds doesnt make that big of a difference in spreading out the field and what r the odds that you will get that extra set of downs by making it to the one, if you got the ten yards to get to the one if you were on the nine you would have already scored

i just had a thought, it also depends on the score of the game, and how much time is on the clock.

Probably under most conditions I would rather have first and ten from the 11 but there would be exceptions due to the game situation. Of course I would rather have first and ten from the fifteen yard line than first and goal from the ten. Those last five yards can be very tough.

I never did like getting a first down just inside the 10.In the back of your mind you know it's now or never. If you are outside the 10 then your thinking it's not so much of a do or die thing with the possibility of getting a first down.Everyone is bringing up some good points pro & con though.
