Steve Lineweaver now with 5A Trinity. Took Commerce to the state game 3 times in the 90's winning once. Before that an assistant at Southlake Carroll when they dominated 3A.
And we cant forget T J Mills now with Odessa Permian. Coached Sealy during their glory years. Cant say much bad about either of these two.

Steve Gaddis and the staff he has assembled at Longview Spring Hill deserve some sort of recognition.

Even in the down years, his teams remain competitive and in the playoff hunt 'til the final week of the season.

The knock on Spring Hill is almost always, TOO SLOW, TOO WEAK, TOO ONE DIMENSIONAL.

With those things against him, Coach Gaddis continues to put a competitive and entertaining product on the field.

Given the limitations of the ballplayers he has to work with on a yearly basis, Coach Gaddis' inovations & accomplishments should rank amongst the upper level of Class 3A coaches.

Mills had an amazing run in Sealy, but I don't think I've ever seen a coach more eager to run up the score than he was during that run.

Mel Maxfield at Forney is definitely one of the better coaches in the state. He has been at Forney for the past 15 years and only missed the playoffs 3 times. With a state final appearance and a quarter-final appearance sprinkeled in there.

Coach Buchanon from Aledo has put up some very nice runs into the playoffs since he took over in Aledo, including winning state in 98'.

Even though he coaches a 4A team now, he was a great 3A coach in the early 90's, Coach Brittain of WFHS is my choice.

Oh, Coach Brittain coached at Vernon. Bring the Lions to a state championship 1990 and to Regional and Area state championships in 1991, 1992, and 1993.

You all better not overlook Coach Greg Morgan at Madisonville. He is one of the new kids on the block even though he has been at other schools, he has never had the talent to work with that he has at Madisonville. Keep an eye on him and his team.

I'm gonna nominate David Wood and his staff at Muleshoe. In his first 5 seasons as a head coach, he has won 2 district titles and made the playoffs the last 3 years straight. He took one of the worst 3A programs in the state and turned it completely around from "perennial losers/dead last doormats" to district champions in 3 years. The guy makes his kids winners!

I SAY COACH CURTIS BARBAY OF NEWTON. HE
HAS BEEN WITH THEM FOR 26 YRS. AND HAS
A GREAT RECORD. EVERY YEAR THEY ARE IN THE
PLAYOFFS AND HE HAS A HELL OF A OFF SEASON
PROGRAM. THE WHOLE COACHING STAFF IS GREAT
DOWN THERE.

Coach Kent Jackson @ Sweetwater is in my opinion the best high school coach i have ever seen. He is very strict on rules about grades and drugs and alcohol. He is also just an excellent coach and if you dont believe me just watch how far we go this year

I have to say Coach Sosa who is a head coach for those Mathis Pirates. He has change that whole program around. Started there in '96 and we have been making the playoffs since. We also went to the State game in '99 in class 3A Div.I!!!!!!! Keep the work up coach and GOOOOOOOO MATHIS PIRATES!!!!!!!!!!

Definitely Coach Curtis Barbay at Newton. He has well over 200 victories, numerous district titles, two state championships, and missed the playoffs only one time in the 90's.

My vote for 'Coach for the last ten or so years' is Gary Davenport. He takes mediocre or fallen programs and makes them into winners!!! Under Davenport, Sinton was one missed FG from state finals in '91. Under Davenport, Aransas Pass went to the state semis in '99(or '98). In '92 Sinton was losing to Hitchcock by 1 point, getting their butts whipped in the second half(13-12) and Hitchcock marching late to win on time, Davenport called for the players(Sinton), to let the Hitchcock runner through. Of course, they scored. Sinton fans and players were LIVID!!!! This was with like 1:45 on the clock, in the game! PPL were leaving quick! What was he thinking?!! Sinton players and fans were screaming! The Hitchcock side was alive! They went up 19-12(Sinton blocked the xtra point try). Sinton(who ran wing-t) didn't pass that much, but all of a sudden, did pass down field and with like 8 secs on the clock, passed for a touchdown and converted the PAT. We won on penetrations!!! That game made me believe Coach Davenport deserves some kinda respect!!! Aransas Pass made similiar impossible plays on their trips to region and state semis! How about a 51 yard field goal to get to the region finals? How many coaches would have that kind of faith in their players? Aransas didn't make one from more than 40 before that...
Davenport deserves some kind of respect.

I believe coach Soza from Mathis was the offensive cord. for Sinton under Davenport in the early 90's. Coach Soza deserves kudos, too.

Only reason Muleshoe has done well the lat few years is because they swutched from a very tough and large district to a weak and small district. They used to have to make trips of 3,4 and 5 hours but now an hour is about the longest drive. The coach has little to do with the turn around. You might as well thank the UIL. Dimmitt, Shallowater, and Tulia have maybe 2 wins between them all year. Littlefield and Cooper are the only respectable teams. Muleshoe needs worry about the playoffs in Small School division. They did not play anybody last year until the semi-finals and were sent home packing.

I would like to put another vote in for Coach Soza from Mathis--he has done a great job. Not only has he done a great job with the football team, he has brought the town together. The stands are full at every game. You can feel the excitement in the air--the way it is suppose to be. Love that Texas Footbal!

i cast my vote for curtis barbay of newton because he coaches like the smallest team around and still is able to play big 5a to 4a schools and whipp the **** out of them. name one other coach that can do that.

Dan Slaughter, formerly of Ballinger. Not real sure where he's at now, but Ballinger screwed themselves out of a great coach.

If you look strictly at wins vs. losses then
some of the best are:

Coaches with more than 100 games
Charlie Johnston of Childress (.773 avg)*
Lewis Boomer of Littlefield (.758 avg)*
Alan Cherry of Crane (.800 avg)
David Husman of Gladewater (.779 avg)
Curtis Barbay of Newton (.759 avg)*

Coaches with less than 100 games
David Flowers of Merkel (.772 avg)
Rick Porter of Quitman (.889 avg)
Randy McFarlin of Daingerfield (.778 avg)*
John Lowery of Crockett (.760 avg)*
Edward Arledge of Cleveland (.833 avg)*

*Indicates that the winning percentage was
at one school.

NOTE: Not sure if all of these coaches are
still at the schools listed.

tj mills was pretty impressive, sealy would still be state bound if he were still there, and i HATE Sealy, my arc-rival. He won like 4 or 5 state titles in a row.

Perhaps Huey Chancellor? Good guy, turned around a struggling program and now is on the road to success. Especially considering their 7-0 start thus far.
