View Full Version : Give Dave Campbell a break!

There've been a bunch of posts on here the last few days about the rankings and district picks in Dave Campbell's Texas Football, and many of them have hammered ol' Dave pretty hard.

I just noticed in my copy of DCTF that this year's picks are courtesy of Carl Padilla of the Padilla Poll. (Check out the last page of the mag for yourself.)

Anyway, just thought that was of some interest.... ;)

The Padilla poll was pretty good until it was changed to a porn link. Is the Padilla poll active again or are they working for Dave now?
I followed that poll from 1999(maybe 1998)-2001 and thought they were fairly accurate then.

I used to follow it pretty religiously too, SintonFan.

Evidently it's now like the Harris Ratings, where you have to pay to see what they have to say.

Makes me appreciate sites like DataPoll and Collier-Sharp that much more!

I appreciate DataPoll for the raw stats. I don't follow CS much. We haven't had Padilla for awhile. So Dave doesn't do his own poll anymore? I'm left to wonder what they do anymore...
I usually enjoy DC Football and really enjoyed the commentary from Dave himself this year. It was a trip down memory lane for many buyers.
.
Over all, the magazine is just a reminder of how big Texas is. It's almost impossible to cover the whole state accurately. Just my opinion.

As far as giving Dave a break, whether or not he does the rankings himself is immaterial. He is responsible for what gets printed in his magazine. I personally think Dave's gone off the deep end and is getting worse every year that goes by. The mag is still a good source for facts and figures and how many returners and stuff like that, but his polls are useless in my opinion. Try this, copy down Dave's preseason picks and Matthew328's. At the end of the season and when the final rankings and standings are decided, get them out and compare them. I'm willing to bet you'll see Matthew 328 kick Dave's butt.

Not to belabor a point, but I was just trying to tell everyone who was ultra-offended by their team either being left off the poll or being ranked too low that they ought not to be making such personal attacks on Dave Campbell. Maybe he HAS slipped over the years, but don't we ALL as we age...? All I was saying is for folks to not act like it's COMPLETELY his doing that their team was dissed.

As for his polls being "useless", aren't ALL high school polls ultimately useless when it comes time to play? Thank God this is high school football we're talking about and not some crazy NCAA system where your entire season hangs on where you rise or fall in the polls. Nobody yet has gotten into the playoffs or won a state championship because of their ranking, I'm pretty sure.

Also, I don't see them as being useless, but for a different reason. Obviously, they give all of us a lot of food for discussion throughout July when we're all waiting for the season to get here.

Just my opinions. They may be useless, too... ;)

DCTF is the only comprehensive report I can lay my hands on to learn about all the high school teams and what they might or may not accomplish. At least it is an attempt and personally I look forward to reading it each year. Bottom line is if you don't like, don't buy......simple as that!

One of my favorite things is looking in old DCTF's to see which so called "Super" players actually hit it big and came thru as predicted.

I don't have any problem with the magazine. I love the magazine. It is one of my favorite tools for making my own predicitions and learning about key players to watch for on other teams. But if I want to slam ole Dave for making a ptitful mistake in his pre-season rankings, then I reserve the right to do so. The way I look at it is this. I paid my ten bucks, so I can complain all I want.:D

Amen Sinton66...I know that it is only a poll and that Dave didn't do the rankings...but his name is on the cover so he is going to have to take the comments about "his" poll. It seems to me that the rankings in DCTF have slipped some over the years. There seems to be a little more whimsy each year. In years past it seems that Dave stuck to conventional wisdom and listened to the coaches who filled out the survey. Nowadays, it seems like the polls throw in a few teams or rank a few teams in places that they have no reason to be ranked. Just an observation. And yes...I think that Matt is going to kick Mr. Padilla's hiney at the end of the season!!!!

I didn't know Padilla did the poll. He has always had a soft place in his heart for Cuero and Coach Reeve. You should probably knock us back 5 or 10 spots for a more accurate placement. Cuero is flattered by #5 but I think that may be a bit much. Never can tell, though. '98 we had less talent than this year and made our ninth final since 1970. As I write this I am changing my mind. Maybe ole Carl knows what he speaks of. Go on and chunk us back up there to #5.

I wish we were unranked...

I've tried not to get my hopes up to much, but I think it may be too late...

After a team returning 5 total starters from a 5-6 team went 9-2? I really believe in this team and these coaches...

Sad thing is you can say a lot about the teams we'll be facing...

Bump us down to #44...

FYI,
Carl Padilla did not do the polls in the DCTF. That was simply and advertisement by Mr. Padilla if you are willing to subscribe to his polls. And furthermore, on my 3A Poll Padilla and I have consulted each other on a regular basis. And believe it or not, we are pretty close on almost all of our polls. I don't know who is doing the polls in the DCTF, but I can almost assure you that it is NOT Padilla. :)
