View Full Version : South Texas Football Question

Could someone please tell me the last time a football team from South Texas won the State Championship? When I say South Texas I mean a city or town below a line drawn due East and West of say Galveston. It can be any class from A to AAAAA. I would just like to know when it happened last.

Thanks in advance for your extensive efforts in research.:D

It was either Mission or Donna and it's been quite a while.

Ok. A line due west from galveston puts your western boundary in the Eagle Pass area. Your most recent champions would be :

Judson 2002 5A
Bay City 2000 4A
LaGrange 2000 3A

Thanks Old Green,

Could I trouble you for one more?

What if you move the line down to Corpus?

I'll play Sans:
Cuero and Refuigo in the 70's and 80's. Lots of San Antonio area.
South of Refugio makes it a lot harder:

Rio Grande Valley's own Donna in '61. (it's an area in Texas that's just North of Mexico - not to be confused with Northern Mexico for all the P.C.ers)
;) ;)
Corpus Christi Miller in '60 and Ray in '59. Corpus Christi High in '38.

I guess so. It just might happen in a couple of years.

Why not just ask if anyone from the RGV had ever won a state championship...would of saved a lot of trouble but you might of angered PIFan.

Yep, we're still hearing Donna people bragging about there State Championship. MMA (Marine Military Academy) located in Harlingen also won a state championship in the 80's i believe but that was in 5ATAPPS. I'd be nice to have someone else bragging for a change.

Thank you sir...don't let PI fan get you down most PI people are just upset because the RGV gets overlooked a lot and they regretfully are a part of that...even though PI has been by far the shining star of the RGV.

Sensitive Sans? LOL

I follow a number of teams. Most of them are in North and East Texas. But I enjoy watching teams from all over the state. I saw 26 games last year. Does that make me sensitive?:D

de nada.

South Texas Football State Champ Sleepers:
5A - None
4A - GP and Calallen
3A - Sinton and PI
2A and below - No Se.

Donna '61 to PI '04.
PI's a huge longshot, but does stand the best chance of any RGV team to "Bring It Back to the Border" !

Sounds like a T-Shirt in the making. FYI - I've already copyrighted the phrase "Bring It Back to the Border".

Now, please focus your energies on helping answer my Parryton question.

Sans,
You don't need to head up to the panhandle. Dave seems to think Pahairyton will be traveling to a town near you come playoff time.

Panhandle come to town! Can't wait to see what all the fuss is about.

Ray_BearKat
07-03-2004, 01:19 AM
Haunta, that a great phrase...I'm gonna pass it on and you can sue me if you want...I'm listed in the phone book under Ray Bearkat :D

And coming from the south texas region...I can tell you that Odem usually does a good job in 2A so does Refugio...RGV 5A has some good teams especially with all the 4A's moving up to 5A. We had an entire 4A district move up to 5A this realignment.

What is gonna help 5A football in the valley is that there is now 3 districts in the valley...expect to hear about some valley 5A's going far in the playoffs.

Old Green
07-03-2004, 01:22 AM
Three 5A districts in RGV should increase the chances of a team advancing further in the playoffs.

Yep, 3 valley 5A schools will win a Bi-District playoff game this year. (I count Laredo as a Valley family member once removed)

Yep, the valley 5A schools won't even meet up with a SA or Corpus school until the 3rd round which in D1 is already the regional finals

So expect at least 1 5A valley school in a Region Final next year

Well I had to go look up Mac Arthur's data poll power rating.

Irving Mac Arthur 114.3

Gainesville 118.5

So I must take exception to your post. I don't think Gainesville would beat them by more than 42.

Now we must work on locating Pareytoughn's 4,000+ yards of missing offense.

The guard around is a classic big yardage gainer, but I haven't ruled out Col. Mustard and Prof. Plum just yet.

I'm still leaning towards OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, in the FIELDHOUSE, with the PENCIL...600 yds per game.

Hey Old I remember in 1962 the year after Donna won State they played Freer in Freer in bi-district and won 12 to 8. All the scoring was done in the first quarter and Freer had doubled on their extra points and Donna missed theirs. After that it was Freer moving into Donna territory the rest of the night but not being after to get the ball into the endzone. Freer was stopped several times by a fumble or penalty or mess up. They had a boy who was a fairly good place kicker and looking back they were so close they should have kicked a field goal and made it 12 to 11 that way near the end of the game they might have won it with a field goal. Anyway the next week Donna played Sinton and their reign came to an official end. Sinton was ahead at the end of the third quarter 21 to 0 but Donna caught fire and scored two touchdowns to make it 21 to 14 but Sinton held on to win by that score.

Phil, that following two years there was a RGV team in Pharr that went to the finals and lost
3A - Dumas 14, Pharr 3('62) and
3A - Corsicana 7, Pharr 0 ('63)

You didn't happen to see them play, did you?

66, I didn't make that game in 62 unfortunately. Back then I was in the 8th grade at Freer and had no idea that in the future I would be living in Sinton and becoming the Sinton Pirate and Lady Pirate fan that I now am. I read about it in the paper and the Corpus Christi Caller had a detailed write up on the game. I am sure it was a great one.

The regional final the following week was between Sinton and Missouri City-Dulles. They played in Victoria, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie with Sinton advancing by virture of 1 more penetration. I saw this game, though fairly young, and it was absolutely the toughest football game I ever remember seeing. People were being carried off both sides of the field all night. When the game was over and Sinton had advanced we had all but one or two starters injured, and went into the semi-final round the following week with mostly second and some third stringers. Needless to say, we lost the next week to Rockdale by a score of 30-20.
