A Mav no more: Nash agrees to deal with Phoenix Suns

07:43 PM CDT on Thursday, July 1, 2004

By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News

FORT WORTH - Steve Nash's career with the Mavericks came to an end today when he agreed to a five-year contract worth more than $60 million with the Phoenix Suns, Nash and his agent said.

"It's over," Nash said. "I'm shocked that it's come to this. I always thought I'd be coming back to Dallas. But Phoenix made it clear that they really, really wanted me."

Nash has been with the Mavericks since 1998, playing six seasons, two of them as an All-Star point guard. He opted out of the final year of his contract after last season.

It took the Suns less than 14 hours to get Nash in their hopper. Jerry Colangelo, their chairman and CEO, and a large entourage flew to Dallas on Thursday, met with Nash at 1 p.m. and had a deal in place shortly thereafter. The contract includes a sixth season at the Suns' option.

The Mavericks refused to match the offer, which meant Nash agreed to the deal.

"I think he (Mark Cuban) was caught off guard by this," said Bill Duffy, Nash's agent.

"They (the Suns) asked us what we were looking for. I feel very strongly that Steve is a premier point guard in the league and absolutely deserves this."

Trust me kaorder. It was not a poker game with Cuban. I am sure he didn't doubt Nash. I just think he has bigger plans.

Now for the Sans_Couth part of my response. Who the heck wants a Short White Canadian on their basketball team anyway?:D

With Nash gone, it clears way for Shaq and Derek Fisher to go to Dallas.

i dont think so in my opinion. I think that the Mavs were expecting to work a sign and trade with Nash and Nash understood that so Nash wanted to have the say where he was going if he was having to leave. He wasnt going to play in a mavs uniform next year. He knew he was going to be traded but like i said...he wanted to have the final say so where he was going to play

Now if you want Shaq, you have no other choice but to trade Dirk. I think with Nash leaving though, the Mavs just lost their chance at the big fella.

My prediction in all this. (Please remember when I talk about win I mean winning the NBA Championship).

The Mavs can't win without Steve Nash!
The Suns can't win with him!
