I remember when he used to do radio commentaries in the 1970s after he left office as governor of California. It turns out he wrote all those himself and they were often very thoughtful analyses of the issues of the day. Someone recently wrote a book about having discovered his notes from that era and they were extensive. People do not realize that when Reagan still had his mental faculties, he was much more intelligent than he was given credit for. He had a lot of common sense, which is not as common as it should be in politics.

I would imagine President Reagan had a speechwriter help out with this, but he probably wrote much of it himself. I doubt if you can say that about the speeches of the current occupant of the White House. I don't think anyone even attempts to claim he writes his own stuff. It is all he can do to read the TelePrompTer without stuttering and stammering.
