Tirvia Question on Dawn at Socorro

For those that watched it. Since it occurs at the first part of the movie it won't ruin it for anyone who later watches it. The question is why didn't Alex Nicol who plays Jimmy Rapp not help his adoptive family in their shootout with Rory Calhoun? The first one that gets the answer in correctly in my judgement gets a big WTG (Way to Go!).
