Rice University Athletics is currently embroiled in a life-threatening debate about continued life in Division I-A athletics. Several Rice athletes, especially football players, are known to 3ADL and played 3A football not long ago. From Bellville, John Syptak has been a tremendous asset to the Owls for two seasons, Garrett Dornon red-shirted this last season, along with Bubba Heard from Sinton, Lance Luedeker from China Springs played some as a true freshman, Goerge Chukwu from the Fort Bend area red-shirted, and Diboll's Jeff Vanover graduated a few days ago. Rice recruits 3A players and it would be a loss to small Texas schools. YOU CAN AFFECT THE OUTCOME! **Go to www.ricefootball.net and let the Board of Trustees know you want Rice to continue to compete at the Div I-A level.** Input is due by May 16. Anyone can write to the board. Please help.

Travis Ortega of Rockdale played football there, he eventually went on to the NFL and was cut by the Cowboys. Now he is playing in the Canadian Football League(CFL).

Lots in the news about this; apparently they go through this debate every 10 years. They have been very successful in every sport this year except football--baseball, mens and womens basketball, tennis, track, golf, mens and womens soccer. As part of the old SWC, many feel differently about them dropping to a lower division. The very point that they can recruit athletes that can compete on the field and in the classroom makes them something to write home about. It is tough for them to recruit because of their academics, but one of the questions is should they RAISE their academic admissions criteria for athletes. I'm biased, what can I say. They recruited a heck of a 2003 football class and should have a strong team, then are moving to C-USA to provide more rivalries regionally. And they take a ton of 3A athletes that would get overlooked otherwise. And a National Championship in baseball is nothing to sneeze at.

# 26 Bubba Heard plays for Rice. He is the best running back Sinton has ever seen in their back field

thats a very bold statement, i believe mac may, robert hughes, marcus charles and a host of others would beg to differ on that. But he is a great running back.

Bubba was darn good and Rice expects bigs things from him.
Where did Marcus Charles end up? Bellville's MLB was after him--hard. Charles stars in our home video as much as the MLB! He was a winner, too. Thanks to all for their input to Rice.

Today is the last day to post a letter to Rice Univ's Board of Trustees at www.ricefootball.net to let them know you want Rice to stay in DI-A. Every letter counts. Again, Sinton folks, where did Marcus Charles end up? I know Alaniz ended up playing baseball at UT, didn't he?

Rice won the Commissioner's Cup (kinda like the Lone Star Cup) for most conference championships this year. Hmmmm. Not too much losing going on. I think letters of support will still be accepted today.

This just goes to show you that FOOTBALL is the only sport that counts. Rice rules the roost in other sports, but they are 'considering' dropping from D1 because they can't compete?

I must agree with kaorder though, you make a lot more money losing big in D1 than you do losing big in D2.:)

I think this season will be a different story. The intellectuals @ Rice think football is too "dumb jock" for the prestigious institution. Yes, football reigns in Texas!

Rice professor: "I don't know what the infatuation is with this...'foosball', but this is an institution of higher learning. Sports have no part of it.":D
