I am going to make a trip this summer that takes me through amarillo and then albequrque. I will be getting on 45 at conroe and heading north...what is my best route??

I could go through abliene instead of 45 but that route along with the el paso to albequrque route looks a bit longer.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, according to my trusty Rand McNally road atlas I came up with: Conroe to Dallas I-45N (*247 mi.); Dallas to Ft. Worth I-20W (30 mi.); Ft. Worth to Amarillo HWY-287NW (338 mi.) Total mileage = 615 miles* Don't know if this is the shortest route, but it looked pretty good to me! :D

* mileage actually using Houston as beginning point

Take 45 N to US 287. US 287 runs straight to Amarillo. You can get on 287 just south of Ennis but there is alot of construction on 287 between 45 and 20 and it might slow you down or you can take 45 to 20 then hit 287 when it crosses 20 in Ft Worth. 287 is your best bet no matter where you get on it.

287 is the Route that Mapblast.com uses - and that's putting in shortest route OR quickest route!

287 between Ennis and Midlothian is rough....construction and one lane a lot of the way......plus stoplights in Midlothian....I'd take 45 into Dallas and then hit I-20 West all the way into Ft Worth......then from I-20 hit 287 heading north..

If it were me. And of course I am me, and I know a lot about travel since I have been to 48 of our states, and have driven over a million miles, this is the route I would take.

I-45 North to Dallas

Go right into the canyon and Pick up I-35 North

Take I-35 North to Denton

Get on 380 West and go straight over to US 287 North

Then of course US 287 will take you straight to Amarillo, and when you get there Just Hang a Left on I-40 and go to Albequerque.

Taking I-20 to 287 south of Ft. Worth, and then traveling up through Ft. Worth on 287 which is actually I-35W is a nightmare.

so it looks like I need to go 45N to I30 and then go west to I35E and take that north to denton and take US 380 west over to US 287...looks like a good route to me thanks guys.

I am going to traveling in late june...is that construction on 45 going to warrant taking a back road?

Watch your speed on 287 between Quanah and Clarendon. Lots of tickets written up on that stretch.

I Would HIGHLY SUGGEST....

Take 45 North until you see I20W... exit onto I20 and drive until you see 287 North. Get onto it and stay with it.

The Ennis route is quicker if you have no traffic... The 380 from Denton route is nice... if there are no Rock trucks running that day.. (SUNDAY?)

thanks slpybear...since you are from right in the area I will take your word that your suggestion is the best route.
