That on Sunday (May 16) at 7:30 P.M. CST that TCM is going to show the great classic western Dawn at Socorro. It stars Rory Calhoun, Piper Laurie, David Brian, Alex Nicol (Great Performance) and Lee Van Cleff. This is a great movie. Don't miss it!

I forgot the movie also has Edgar Buchanan in it. The acting is all great but many people thought Alex Nicol's performance in it was the best supporting performance of the 50's except for Hugh Griffith in Ben Hur of course.

A little trivia to stir interest in getting some of you to watch this great movie. At the first part of the movie Alex Nicol failed to help his adopted family in their shootout with Rory Calhoun. Why did he fail to do so?

Phil,

I will leave the trivia question to someone who wants to look it up, but I have a question about the movie.

Don't you think that the movie is a lot like the story of the Wyatt Earp family, with the names changed to protect the innocent?

There are about a gazillion similarities when you watch the movie.

Watch it again, and tell me if you can figure out who is who.

You will enjoy it very much Poncho. The color is great and the last five minutes is terrific with suspense and action in the final shootout. Alex Nicol is great. I won't give away the story but he is the one at the first of the movie that doesn't help his adopted family in the first shootout with Rory Calhoun. This is an important part of the movie. The trivia question is why he didn't help his adopted family.

Also the good thing is that on TCM you will be able to watch this great movie without any commercial interuptions. For those of you who never saw this great movie (and this seems to be a hugh majority if not all of you) you are in for a great treat! If you don't have TCM on your cable get a friend that does to record it for you. If you have it be sure to not miss it! A great western indeed.

Dawn at Socorro has a great cast and all performances are good. It includes Rory Calhoun, Piper Laurie, David Brian, Alex Nicol, Lee Van Cleff, and Edgar Buchannan. Alex Nicol is magnificient but all are good. Many people thought Alex Nicol's performance was the best supporting performance in the 50s except for Hugh Griffith's performance in Ben Hur of course. He plays the gunfighter that in the first part of the movie fails to help his adopted family in a showdown against Rory Calhoun. A trivia question is why did he miss this shotout. When you see the movie you will find out. A terrific night coming up!

Sans I know what you mean by saying the similarity to Wyatt Earp. The main thing that I am trying to get is people to watch a great western but what you mentioned is interesting and I know what parts are what.

Just two more days till Sunday night on TCM at 7:30 P.M. when Dawn at Socorro will be shown. A real treat. As I have said the cast is great but one of the two standouts are Edgar Buchannan as the sheriff of Socorro. He was Uncle Joe in Petticoat Junction. Then of course Alex Nicol is outstanding as the main villian that wants a showdown with Rory Calhoun for killing his family in the shootout at the first of the movie. Two more days! Don't miss it!!
