Totally tasteless. Coaches need to show more maturity than that ( even if that's the way they feel, they don't need to humiliate anyone ). Their mamas obviously didn't teach them the "do unto others" thing! Shame on 'em.

I can see a little good natured ribbing in the locker room. I remember we wore ribbing from the coaches like a "badge of honor" But to do it at the banquet is a whole different ballgame.

I think this wouldn't have been so bad if it had happened in high school...but in middle school, a lot of kids are going through a lot of changes and having a rough time...if this happens in HS, people laugh about it and it's not nearly as big of a deal. But to do this to a youngster who has a lot of things going through his mind....that's not right.

I think it's crappy at High School level too!!

IMO, there is a time and place for everything, degrading someone at a sports banquet, or whatever it was, it NOT the place!!

Inappropriate at any level. If the coaches needed to address whiney behavior it should have been behind closed doors. Publically choosing a kid like this for humiliation whether it was done in the form of "good-natured ribbing" or not is totally uncalled for. This kid may have been a pain in the behind but he didn't deserve this and the coaches showed a complete lack of a mature perspective in this situation. I think that the school district should consider not renewing their contracts.

the coach needsto learn what class is and how to apply it to everyday life. if there was anything our i learned in highschool from my coaches it was that you should always show class no matter what the situation. as for this coach he may need a new job(hopefully next year) and get whats comming to him because what goes around comes around. i hope the child grows past this obscurity and the asinine person that his coach presents himself as and becomes all-state or all-american.

Just proves once again, there is always an a-hole around somewhere. What a classless act. Punished my eye, he needs to be fired.

Actually there was an idea about having a traveling t-shirt from game to game, but some sort of symbolic trophy might not be a bad idea either. As long as we continued to pass it on till it reached the state championship games.

"Coyle said he would ask the board a second time to authorize a five-day suspension without pay and the forfeiture of a $3,000 pay raise due to Guillen. "

A 3,000 dollar pay raise?!?  That'll never happen around here...:(

And to think this is a special education teacher to boot... but I'm happy to see the school administrators standing up and trying to take aim at the problem... to many schools try to brush this and more serious offenses under the table. Makes you wonder how your own school would have handled this situation :)
