The La Grange defense this year may be as good as the 2001 team. They were like an "avalanche" yesterday scoring 11 points in the first half against a fired up Crystal City team that had no intention of rolling over. The first two defensive series resulted in TWO safeties, the first when the Javalinas were forced to punt from the 1 yard line, the second caused by a fumble in the endzone resulting from a qb sack. I believe the Javalinas only had 3 first downs (one from a incidental facemask penalty on a good stop on 3rd and 5). The Javalinas have a quick huddle and line-up fast with a short count which is intended to confuse defenses and catch them in between shifts. It didn't work against this crew however. Coach Cauthern has made tremendous progress with this group since openning the season in Yoakum.
Finally, it was thrilling to see #22 Josh Johnson finally get a chance to contribute after a three week determination of eligibility process. Contribute he did, running a fumble recovery 52 yards for La Grange's only td in the first half and making key stops time after time. He and Byran Hayes #74 are my nominees for defensive MVPs this game, although #27 Tieman and #15 Gunn have to be mentioned as well. It is thrilling to see how well this team responds to good coaching. Keep sharp Leps, and you will surprise yourselves.
