Berryman Wins State Powerlifting Championship
Senior Amos Berryman, who was a part of the GHS football team's run to a state title, won a gold medal at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association's state meet Saturday at the Killeen Convention Center. Berryman, who finished second in his weight class last year and has qualified for the state meet each of the past 3 years, finished with 1,345 pounds in the 165-pound weight class.
The senior squatted 520 pounds, bench pressed 250 pounds, and deadlifted 575 pounds, which almost set a new state record.
In addition to the gold medal, Berryman also took home a $1,000
scholarship from the THSPA.
Berryman qualifed for state by finishing first at the regional meet in Celina. At that meet, Berryman lifted a total of 1,305 pounds.
In a meet earlier this year at Saint Jo, Berryman placed first with a
total of 1,300 pounds. He was named outstanding lifter at that meet.
