What's the life cycle of a mosquito?

3afan2K3
03-11-2004, 09:01 PM
http://www.kidfish.bc.ca/images/mosquito_life_cycle.jpg

Egg : Eggs are laid one at a time and they float on the surface of the water. In the case of Culex and Culiseta species, the eggs are stuck together in rafts of a hundred or more eggs. Anopheles and Ochlerotatus species do not make egg rafts but lay their eggs separately. Culex, Culiseta, and Anopheles lay their eggs on water while Ochlerotatus lay their eggs on damp soil that will be flooded by water. Most eggs hatch into larvae within 48 hours.

Larva : The larva (larvae - plural) live in the water and come to the surface to breathe. They shed their skin four times growing larger after each molting. Most larvae have siphon tubes for breathing and hang from the water surface. Anopheles larvae do not have a siphon and they lay parallel to the water surface. The larva feed on micro-organisms and organic matter in the water. On the fourth molt the larva changes into a pupa.

Pupa: The pupal stage is a resting, non-feeding stage. This is the time the mosquito turns into an adult. It takes about two days before the adult is fully developed. When development is complete, the pupal skin splits and the mosquito emerges as an adult.

Adult: The newly emerged adult rests on the surface of the water for a short time to allow itself to dry and all its parts to harden. Also, the wings have to spread out and dry properly before it can fly.

The length of the mosquito¡¯s life cycle depends on temperature and species characteristics. For instance, the mosquito Culex tarsalis , which is common in North Dakota, might go through its life cycle in 14 days at 70¢ª F and take only 10 days at 80¢ª F. Some species have adapted to go through their life cycle in as little as four days where as other species take as long as one month.

Wrong.

BIG BLUE DEFENSIVE END
03-11-2004, 09:51 PM
To Sinton66...mass is the reason that there is gravity. The higher the mass, the greater the gravity. Anything that has mass has a certain amount of gravity. The moon has a certain amount of gravity and is the cause of the ocean tides, etc. That's the best way that I know how to explain it.

Ranger Mom

pink and black

therealbulldogs
03-11-2004, 09:53 PM
CORRECT!!!!

Penn State's student-athletes are instantly identified by their blue and white uniforms - but those weren't the original school colors. A three-member committee representing the sophomore, junior and senior classes was appointed in October of 1887 to develop color options from which the student body would select the school's official colors. Dark pink and black was the unanimous choice of the student body after considering the color combinations presented by the committee.

Soon many students and the baseball team were sporting pink and black striped blazers and caps. However, problems arose when the pink faded to white after several weeks of exposure to the sun. The students then opted for blue, rather than black, and white. The official announcement of the new choice was made on March 18, 1890.

Do you know that gravity could be responsible for a large part of the "dark mass" that scientist can't figure out now? Antimatter might have a less part of the total mass in the universe than recently predicted. I love science!

Very good, mwynn... where do most of those trees grow?

Sans Couth
03-21-2004, 10:37 PM
The cashew tree is originally from Brazil, and is a parent to the pistachio and mango tree. It grows mainly in Africa in India, where the Portuguese brought it in the 16th century. However the golden area of cashew nuts trade only started in the early 20th century. The main producers are : India, Brazil, Mozambique, Nigeria and Tanzania. India controls over 90% of the world production. In Brazil and in the Caribbean the population prefers the cashew apple -considered as a delicacy- to the nut that is often thrown away !!!!

Actually, it was PYLE. George Lindsey's character was named Goober Pyle.

Since we're on a television kick, how about this one?

On the show "Miami Vice", Crockett was always referred to as "Sonny". That was a nickname. What was his actual first name? (character, not the actor).

Sans Couth
03-26-2004, 08:48 PM
Too Easy.

Sonny's first name was James.

On a tougher note.

MacGyver only told his first name in one season, can you remember?

One of the most love characters on The Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry RFD, and later Hee Haw is George Lindsey. George is much more than "Goober Pyle" though.

Actually, his name was Fergus. They also had a cousin( I think) named Black Jack Hagen (Played by Denver Pyle). Black Jack was the black sheep of the family.

This same episode had a guest star who played Black Jack's girlfriend named April. She later went on to become a regular on "Gomer Pyle, USMC" portraying Gomer's girlfriend, Lou Ann. What was Lou Ann's last name and who was the star that portrayed her?
