In the Next playoff game Sinton plays Zapata. I don't where they will play it but Falfurrias is the most logical half way point it appears.

Congratulations on a fine win there Pirates! Good Luck next week against Zapata. I have been waiting for this match up for three years now. If any other Pirate Fan goes to callertimes.com, they will remember the s@!$ they were talking, around that time. They have been waiting for this match up, so now they got it. Can they hang with Sinton, or not?

If Sinton plays like they did against Carrizo, excluding the fumbles,I don't see Zapata winnin.

sinton66

This is the farthest Zapata has ever been in the playoffs in my tired old memory, of course I could be wrong about that. I wouldn't want to tempt Murphy. I hope the Pirates will take care of business this week. Everybody just pray for no injuries, please.

anyone know? Here is Zapata's record according to Data Poll:

Aug29 at Carrizo Springs W 20-14
Sep5 vs Hidalgo L 12-33
Sep12 vs Laredo Cigarroa W 25-14
Sep19 at Mathis L 28-34
Oct3 vs Crystal City W 39-29
Oct10 at Falfurrias W 18-13 31-3A
Oct17 at Orange Grove W 8-6 31-3A
Oct24 vs Bishop W 14-13 31-3A
Oct31 at San Diego W 27-12 31-3A
Nov7 vs Hebbronville W 18-6 31-3A
Nov14 vs La Feria (-3) 3A Div I Playoffs W 21-16

The 31-3A district games are the ones I look at the most for an indicator. Particularily how they did against Orange Grove and Bishop. Pre-district doesn't mean much as we all know. My gut tells me Zapata will struggle if Sinton is up.

Harlandale Memmorial in San Antonio is not out of the question here. Maybe even the dome. That is IF we're going with completely neutral this time. IMHO, San Marcos is too close to Burnet. If we get to choose like I suspect, it'll be Victoria, bank on it. Could set a record there. But, we need to get past Zapata first.

I agree with Sinton 66. We need to exercise our home field advantage turn and have it in Victoria. The stadium is adequate and besides we had to trave the long distance last year so it is Burnet's turn now. Anyway both sides need to get past Wharton and Zapata so that is a possible future problem. If the game was in Sinton I feel Sinton would win by 9 points. If it was neutral I would say Sinton by 6 points. But since Zapata has home field advantage and it is in Laredo I say Sinton will win by 3 points. Probably about 20 to 17.

sinton66

Let's definitely not get ahead of ourselves. Carrizo Springs was a 3rd place finisher in their district. Zapata is a Bi-district Champ. Could be a big difference. wink

I was just wondering.I think they run the same offense as Mathis, don't they (Mathis)primarly use the Wing T offense?? Don't know much about their defense. If the boys come out & play like they did Saturday they'll win by at least 21 points. GO PIRATES!!

Yeah they run the nasty slot and that should be to Sinton's advantage since they see it at least twice a year! I think Sinton will be well prepared and ready to take care of business.

Sinton94
11-17-2003, 05:27 PM
The offense was very balanced this past week and looked really good throwing the ball. I liked what I saw, T can run and catch and that makes for double trouble. I still think the offense has some tricks up their sleeve as well. The defense is also improving each week and has really been stellar in the second half of their last 6 games. They are a very young team who looks like they are building confidence and momentum with each game. I think that tough schedule they played in the pre-season is now paying off.
Good Luck Pirates and keep up the good work!

Man, I can't find anything about Zapata online except an occasional motel ad. It's like there's a internet blackhole over there or something. If I find anything I'll post it here. Like 66 said, Zapata will be much, much tougher than Carrizo Springs.

Here's a little story about the Zapata-La Feria game as reported by valleystar.com:
.
The hunt is over is the Lions
By GREG SELBER
Star correspondent

LA JOYA — There they sat, with somber faces, on a trainer’s table behind the bench while their team faded away from the state football playoffs. Adrian Limon, ice on his knee, and Albert Castillo, sidelined for the last three weeks, were out of action as the La Feria Lions tried vainly to stave off a 21-16 bi-district playoff defeat at the hands of Zapata here Friday.

La Feria, which led 10-0 at one point, died on the vine in the second half, with game replacements attempting to keep the Lions (7-3 to finish the year) going for another week.

When they needed to run the ball in the second half, they could not, and Castillo would have surely helped. The Lions gained just 45 yards on 17 second-half tries and failed to take advantage of two fourth-quarter Zapata turnovers inside the Hawk 40. When a key pass completion was a necessity, La Feria could not call upon Limon, as his backups gave it a whirl but came up empty.

Still, Lion coach Robert Valdez praised his team, and his fill-ins, for fighting the good fight in the face of long odds.

"We were banged up tonight, no doubt," said Valdez, who lost both his star players against Port Isabel in week eight. "But we hung in there and I am proud of the kids tonight."

La Feria dropped to 4-11 in career playoff games, despite the early lead and a splendid defensive game from linebacker Nathan Edelstein, who made 14 tackles to keep things close.

The Lions will look back on those two fourth-quarter misfires as the turning point, at the end of a season that saw them begin 6-0 and then lose three of their last four games.

Trailing 21-16 after Zapata (8-3) scored 21 straight points to take the lead, the Lions got a fumble recovery from Matt Molina at the Hawk 30 with 6:58 left. But on third-and-12, third-team quarterback Roel Loredo threw an interception at the Zapata 16.

Then, when Zapata fumbled on the very next series, the Lions again saw a game-winning chance fall by the wayside. Taking the ball at the Hawk 38, Loredo thrilled the Lion fans with a 15-yard strike on a third-and-7 to Luis Rodriguez. But, Steve Cox (115 yards rushing as La Feria gained 146 on the ground) lost three, two passes fell incomplete, and on fourth down Loredo scrambled for nine when he needed 13.

That was it, as Zapata, 31-3A champ, will now go on to face the winner of today’s bi-district match between Sinton and Carrizo Springs. The Hawks rushed for 220 yards and added 73 in the air, and were led by Heriberto Dominguez’ 106 rushing yards.

The Hawks cut the lead to 10-7 with 1:29 left in the half, capping an 82-yard drive with a 1-yard TD from Danny Solis.

When La Feria second-team QB Matt Garcia lost a fumble at his own 35 early in the third quarter, Zapata drove for the go-ahead score at 5:13. The TD came on a fourth-and-goal from the one, when QB Orlando Martinez fooled La Feria with play-action and connected with Chris Chambers on a pass in the left corner of the end zone.

Later the Hawks drove 82 yards again, on 10 plays, to make it 21-10 on a 16-yard Martinez keeper with 9:28 to go in the game.

Loredo rallied the Lions to within five as he threw a 46-yard pass to Jared Mullins and later handed to Marco Cano for a 13-yard TD run at 7:08.

But when it counted, La Feria was hurt by its hurts, and could not regain the lead. The victorious coach noted the hard hitting and the staunch efforts by La Feria’s injured squad.

"We never gave in, and we have been coming back all season long," said Zapata Coach Mario Arce. "They (La Feria) fought hard, but we had no doubt we could come back, and we did it."

Rodriguez had given the Lions a 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 30-yard field goal at 3:00, and then he caught a 33-yard, third-down touchdown ball from Limon, playing briefly through the pain, at 9:14 of the second.
