Leopards Bruise Bonham 30-0

How dominant is the Gainesville Leopards defense? Well through two
games, the GHS defense has SCORED two more touchdowns themselves than
they have allowed.
Friday night against the Bonham Warriors, the Leopards defense was super
stingy, allowing just 53 yards of total offense and three first downs in
a 30-0 shutout at Leeper Stadium. Gainesville has not allowed a single
point in eight quarters of football this season.
"We pride ourselves on defense," Gainesville head coach Jeff Cordell
said afterwards. "That's one thing that Coach (Patrick) Harvell
(defensive coordinator) preaches is that defense wins championships. We
feel that if we keep teams out of the end zone, then we have a great
chance to win ballgames. The kids that play defense, whether it's ones
or twos or threes, they all take a lot of pride in that."
Gainesville's defense got the team on the scoreboard first and helped
turn what could have been a bad situation into something good. The
Leopard offense fumbled the ball on their second play of the game to
give Bonham the ball at the GHS 38-yard line. But when Bonham took over
the ball, Leopard senior Chase Beam hit Warrior running back Julius
Scott and jarred the ball loose. GHS senior defensive back Darcel McBath
was there to scoop up the ball and race 57 yards for a touchdown. Steven
Arenas added the extra point kick to put the Leopards ahead 7-0 less
than 4 minutes into the game.
Neither team's offense moved the ball much in the first quarter. The
Leopards had just 3 yards of offense and ran just 5 plays in the first
12 minutes. Bonham's biggest gain of the night occurred late in the
quarter as quarterback Colby Jones hit tight end Will Moss for a 24-yard
gain over the middle. But the Warriors went backwards from there.
Gainesville didn't get their initial first down of the game until Brown
ran 18 yards on third and two midway through the second quarter. The
Leopards moved the ball down to the Bonham 8 and actually scored on a
Terrius Purvey run from there, but a holding penalty nullified the
score. Later, Arenas missed a 35-yard field goal and the score remained
7-0.
The Leopard defense came back on the field and shut down Bonham, forcing
a punt. Three plays later, Purvey scored on a 35-yard TD run and Arenas
added the kick to put Gainesville ahead 14-0. That was the score at
halftime.
"I think that last week (against Wichita Falls Hirschi) we played a
good first half, but this week we didn't play a good first half,"
Cordell said. "We challenged the kids at halftime about coming out in
the second half and being ready for a war. The kids responded to that
challenge in the second half and I was proud of that."
The Leopards (2-0) came out and scored on their first offensive series
of the second half. Purvey had a 10-yard run to move the ball to the 46.
From there, Brown hit McBath on a 54-yard TD pass and catch to push the
lead to 21-0.
Gainesville's defense again held Bonham without a first down and forced
a punt. Leopard junior running back Jerome Hewitt then ran 43 yards down
to the 2-yard line, but another holding penalty wiped out the play and
the Leopards were forced to punt.
GHS punter Luke Smallwood pinned the Warriors back at their 7-yard line.
Three plays later, the Bonham quarterback was trying to roll out to
pass, but Gainesville's Dylan Buck hit him and knocked the ball loose.
Bonham ended up recovering the ball in the end zone for a safety that
put GHS ahead 23-0 with 2:39 remaining in the third quarter.
A couple of series later, Purvey busted a 34-yard TD run down the right
sideline, but yet another holding penalty brought it back.
"It's very frustrating," Cordell said of the penalties. "That's
something that we have to address. When you're playing good clubs down
the road, those can come back to haunt you and put you in a bad
situation."
The Leopards would score one series later as Brown hit McBath on a
29-yard TD pass. Arenas' kick made it 30-0.
Gainesville's offensive line played well, not allowing a sack. Nick
Daulong, Chase Beam, Daniel Brennan, Eli Fisher, Clint Stoffels and
Jeramey Hinkle all had good games.
Purvey finished as the top rusher for the Leopards with 64 yards on 11
carries. Brown ran the ball 8 times for 48 yards and Justin Booker had 3
carries for 25 yards. Brown was 5 of 15 passing for 96 yards and two
touchdowns. McBath had 3 catches for 86 yards, Jason Westover had 1 for
8 yards, and Courtney Royal had 1 for 2 yards.
Defensively, linebackers Shawn Thomas and Jeremy Franklin seemed to be
in on every tackle. Franklin also had a fumble recovery. Also playing
well were Buck, Stoffels, McBath, Cody Brewer, Colt Eberhart and Amos
Berryman.
The Leopards defense will look for their third-straight shutout this
Friday when they host Lake Worth at Leeper Stadium.
