3A DIV. II REGION I AREA ROUND

6 p.m. Saturday, Boswell High School

The Wildcats remember this round well, having been upset by Ballinger 20-17 last season. Iowa Park's record might be deceiving considering the Hawks share a district with perennial powers Graham and Vernon. The Wildcats' blitzing defense will face a Hawks offense that operates out of three formations: single-wing, Wing T and shotgun. The Hawks' eight-man defensive front could challenge the Kennedale running game (299 yards per game) but leaves little to stand in the way if one of several Wildcats backs breaks through. Kennedale is in the second round of the playoffs for a third consecutive season. Iowa Park is in for the seventh time in nine seasons, losing to Decatur in the third round in 2002.

Odds and Trends
Rex Harper has rushed for at least two touchdowns in all 11 of Kennedale's games. He scored twice in Saturday's 60-21 win over Sanger. Harper has scored 28 touchdowns on 140 carries, an average of one touchdown for every five carries.

Iowa Park (7-4) vs. Kennedale (10-1)
Game site: Boswell
Kickoff time: Saturday, 6 p.m.
Last week: Iowa Park’s Zac Davis ran for two touchdowns while quarterback Justin Swenson rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown to go with 148 yards passing to lead the Hawks to a 32-21 victory over Ballinger. WR Chase Burgher hauled in five passes for 89 yards, and linebacker Brian Love scored a touchdown on offense and contributed seven tackles on defense. Iowa Park held one of the state’s top rushers (Antonio Posey) to a single touchdown, while limiting Ballinger to just 137 yards on 35 carries. Kennedale smashed Sanger 60-21 last week, behind a combined 421-yard rushing day from fullback Weldon Brooks and tailback Rex Harper. Brooks ran for 163 yards and three touchdowns, while Harper rushed for 114 yards and two TDs.
Game summary: Iowa Park’s offense should catch Kennedale off guard with its multiple formations. It would be tough for any defensive coordinator to game plan for all of the different looks the Hawks will try. Defensively, Iowa Park may be up against the best offense it has faced all year. Kennedale has several game-breakers at the skill positions. And although the running game (two 1,000-yard rushers) can put up big numbers, so can the passing game. Two of the Wildcats’ receivers have more than 400 yards on the year. Kennedale’s defense gave up 197 yards through the air last week, and since Iowa Park recently installed a shotgun spread offense, it would make sense to utilize it against the Wildcats. Most importantly, the Hawks have to keep Kennedale from getting off to a good start. Their multiple eight-man front has to plug the holes against a deadly Kennedale rushing attack. The Wildcats typically start fast, which is why they average 50 points per game.
Players to watch: (IP) C Kyle Stewart, OLB Michael Fulkerson, FS Dustin Riley, OT Tyler Duggins; (K) QB Bryan Barrett, FB Weldon Brooks, RB Rex Harper, WR Kashif Williams, WR Chris Morris.
Coach’s quote: "I hope we can just play with them and make it to the fourth quarter. If we can do that, then we’ll have a chance to win. That’s what we’ve done all year long. I think our kids will play them tough." Iowa Park coach Chris Ellis.
