Hurricane Lili forced not only the rescheduling of most of the area's Friday night games, but the subsequent rescheduling of some of next week's games.

Thanks to Hurricane Lili, a high school version of Monday Night Football is coming to Southeast Texas.

The hurricane, which was upgraded to Category 4 early Wednesday afternoon, forced not only the rescheduling of most of the area's Friday night games but the subsequent rescheduling of some of next week's games.

While some schools at least tentatively reset their games for Saturday, others chose to wait until Monday because of uncertainties concerning the return of players who evacuated the area with their families.

All of the Distrist 20-4A games - Central at Vidor, Lumberton at Nederland, Ozen at West Orange-Stark and Little Cypress-Mauriceville at Silsbee - were rescheduled for Monday night.

Because University Interscholastic League rules prohibit the playing of football games only four days apart, these schools had to also reschedule their Oct. 11 games for Saturday, Oct. 12.

"It's a tough situation, especially after you've had two good practices on Monday and Tuesday, to all of a sudden have to break your routine," said Jeff Mathews, Vidor's head coach. "This isn't a time, however, to place importance on football. The importance now shifts to the safety of your players and their families.

"I kept watching and hoping that the hurricane would take a more drastic turn away from us, but it didn't. The storm and the loss of preparation time for this game and for next week's game (Vidor will play at LC-M on Oct. 12) are distractions, but they are equal ones for all of the teams in the district."

If enough of his players return in time, Mathews said, the Pirates will have a 4 p.m. practice Friday and a walkthrough session Saturday, if possible.

As of late Wednesday, two area games - Buna at Hardin and Hamshire-Fannett at Anahuac - were still scheduled for Friday. Games tentatively switched to Saturday included Orangefield at Bridge City, Smiley at Jasper, Kelly at Newton and Hardin-Jefferson at Kountze.

Coaches stressed that further changes could be made pending the severity of damage from the hurricane and the availability of electrical power and game officials.

The Enterprise was unable to reach coaches at several area schools, leaving the status of their Friday games as uncertain at Wednesday's press time.

The other District 20-4A games reset from Oct. 11 to Oct. 12 are Nederland at Central, Silsbee at Port Neches-Groves and West Orange-Stark at Lumberton.

Talk about switching all around...the Jasper game was originally rescheduled to Saturday night at 6. Then they changed it to Saturday afternoon at 3. Now I think they are gonna play at the original time tonight (Friday). The Newton game was cancelled from what I understand. frown
