I see where Navasota beat Crockett 26-24. I would have thought that Navasota could have beat Crockett more than that. These teams went Crockett(5-5) and Navasota(5-6), last season. Someone has said they thought Navasota may have a better team this year. Elgin popped them 22-13 last year in the first Playoff game; and Elgin looks poised to be quite competitive again this year.

Navasota/Crockett Game Summary

The Rattlers went up 26-6 early in the 3rd and we thought we had the game in hand. I guess we just let up. Crockett has some studs at its skill positions. They can score quickly. The Rattlers pulled off a close one and this will only make them a better team. They sure are back down to earth after that big win over Brenham now.

NAVASOTA — Navasota built a 26-6 lead over Crockett at Brule Field on Friday night, then had to hang on for dear life to shut down a Bulldog rally for a 26-24 non-district victory.

Navasota coach Dan Burk said these kind of games might lead to heart attacks.

The fun thing about Navasota (2-0) was watching 210-pound senior Chris Smith run rampant. After a game of 163 yards last week against Brenham, he flirted with 300 Friday, getting 292 on 36 carries.

“Chris really had some kind of game,” Burk said. I thought our kids did a good job of pulling it out for a win. It takes some of those kinds of games to make the kids grow up.”

Crockett’s rejuvenated running game in the second half seemed to help the Bulldogs pull off two long pass gainers to set up touchdowns, but Burk said he didn’t think so.

“We knew they had some great skilled athletes,” he said. “They are really strong at quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Crockett (0-1) was a very good football team. But we just made too many mistakes.”

Indeed. The Rattlers lost two fumbles, had a pass intercepted and allowed Crockett’s stunning and electrifying 100-yard runback of a missed 40-yard field goal by Fernando Espinoza. The Rattlers seemed to forget that the ball is live and by the time they realized their mistake Kevin Robbins has passed the main defensive body and went all the way.

Navasota dominated Crockett in the first half, scoring from 41 yards away after Francisco Herrera returned the opening kickoff 58 yards to the Bulldog 41. Smith carried four consecutive times to the 4 from where quarterback Scott Martin went off right tackle for the touchdown.

The Rattlers moved 41 yards to the Bulldog 24. Espinoza’s 40-yard field goal fell short for the Crockett fireworks.

That was about it for the Bulldogs in the first half. They could manage only three first downs and had a net 24 yards of offense.

Navasota scored on its first series of the second quarter. They went 56 yards in six plays, Smith piling up 28 yards before Martin again ran a sneak and dashed in from 15 yards. Espinoza missed the PAT.

Navasota did just what it need to open the second half, going 61 yards in seven plays, Martin scoring again, this time from 2 yards. The passing conversion failed.

The Rattlers gave up a couple of first downs on Crockett’s next series, scoring from 81 yards away in five plays, Smith set it up with a 63-yard burst to the 9 from where Martin again scored and Espinoza kicked for a 26-6 lead.

Crockett began to rally on the next series. The 7-play, 67 yard drive was highlighted by a 40-yard pass from Chris Jones to Robbins who beat the defender and made a fine catch. Crockett’s 245-pound Percival Strange bulled over from the 1. The kick failed.

Then Navasota opened the door. Already on a run, Crockett got a fumble from Navasota on the ensuing kickoff and had to move only 39 yards for another score. Jones faked a bootleg and handed to Robbins on a reverse for the 21-yard score. The passing conversion failed and it was 26-18.

Navasota successfully used up enough time in the nest two series to win the game.

The Rattlers will host Austin Anderson next Friday.
