Why brag about scoring 66 on a team that some high school teams could beat, Texas showed no class running up the score, you might need to save some of thoes points for K. State and Oklahoma!

BurnetBulldog

Texas did not intentionally run the score up. Hard not to score when they can't stop a punt return or your second and third string. I did see the cheerleading squad warming up so maybe NMS would have had a better chance of keeping the score respectable.

On the last play of the game, they could have gone to a knee, but they handed the ball off, to see if they could get one more! Go to a knee and show some class, dont hand it off for more!

Eagles52

give NMSU some respect they were shutting down the Texas offense completely for a little over the first quarter, but the sheer number of great athletes Texas can put on the field started to overwhelm a tired team. They simply did not have nearly enough or adequate depth to play with the horns, however they did play hard so they deserve some credit

sinton66
08-31-2003, 10:10 PM
Ok, did Young run the ball at all?

handing off to you fourth string rb from your third string qb is NOT running up the score. called getting some playing time. Mack had no other intentions and if you think he was trying to run the score up you would have seen Roy Williams, S. Young, Benson, Mock and the rest of the starters in the game. Hell, there were guys out there that were happy just to see action. It's all part of the game and no one thought it was an intentional act of running up the score...with the exception of you brama...

xhardinhornet
08-31-2003, 10:19 PM
NO, On the last play of the game they should have ran it. Let those back-ups get as many reps as possbile, to see what kind of depth you have for the year. It doesn't matter if the score is 66-7. You must be an Aggie Fan. Queers I tell ya'.

To answer sinton66, Vince Young ran 5 times for 61 yards and 2 TDs, mostly on designed draws. He really looked great running, very smooth and athletic. He also completed a bomb to Sloan Thomas, I think it was about 60 yards.

sinton66
08-31-2003, 10:25 PM
Thanks, Travis. That sounds like the Young I'm familiar with. He is talented both ways for sure. I saw him roll out, throw and hit about a fifty yarder right in the hands while he was at Madison.

Chance Mock got off to a real slow start tonight. I guess I have to cut him some slack as he had thrown fewer than 10 passes in his career to date.

However, from what I saw of Vince Young, I think we could have a "quarterback controversy" on our hands if Mock starts out this way against Arkansas. Wasn't Young the No. 1 recruit in the nation the year he was signed? He sure looked like it tonight.

Also, it took Selvin Young to get the 'Horns back in the game. Cedric Benson is overrated and fumbles too much. Plus, he seems to have an 'it's all about me' bad attitude from an article I read a few weeks ago when he was dissing Brown about pulling him from the game last season just as he was "getting rolling." Ced, I love ya, but the reason you are pulled is usually because you've just fumbled again.

Hook 'Em Horns! I'm an alum and I bleed orange, but I find it is never a good idea to become emotionally invested in the team. In a few weeks, Brown will likely be telling us what a great team OU has after the inevitable mid-season loss to the Sooners.

all he did was keepers and one bomb. they designed a few draw plays for him and even ran the option once. i left the game at half time ebcause of rain and watched the rest on tv

we didn't run up the score, there were 4 defensive touchdowns, what do you expect a cornerback to do when he intercepts teh ball and has a wide open field. besides we wanted to see what young could do at the end. the bomb pass was unnecessary but we wanted to check out his arm, that was the only long play we did.

I will say this about Vince Young, I am convinced he is the real deal. Wouldn't surprize me if he gets a LOT of pressure to sign up for the draft immediately after one year as the starter.

I've been wondering for some time why Young isn't starting. I thought it a shame when Sims came to Texas instead of Tennessee. Seemed to be the thing to stick with Applewhite and then go with Young. I know Mock is no slouch. But, in my opinion, Young is the better way to go. Of course, that's just my take.

Mock has earned his starting position. Young is no doubt the better athlete with great potential, but watching him during practice this year made it clear that he is not ready to lead a pass-oriented offense.

He does have a cannon and great mobility in the pocket, but has a hard time looking into the progession and making short, finesse passes to his receivers. The only pass he really throws is the long bomb to a receiver who has burned his man downfield. The 60 yard pass he completed to Sloan Thomas tonight would have been intercepted against a team with decent cornerbacks (i.e. OU) and he won't be able to run nearly as effectively against a team with equal speed as his on defense (again, OU).

It is awesome to watch him run through a defense as if they are standing still and air up the long ball that stays in the air for over 60 yards, but Mock can pick a defense apart better, and spread the ball around on the shorter routes. Maybe later in the season he'll learn to do it more effectively, he definitely showed improvement through practice this year, but as of now Mock is better for the starting role.

It was exciting watching Vince and Selvin Young running the option play tonight, I think over the next couple of years Texas will shift their offense more towards the option and run, could be exciting.

I know it was still in High School, but there's a bunch of players that came from Galena Park Northshore that could prolly convince you of Young's ability to get it done. Both those teams had plenty of speed on both sides of the ball and neither one could stop each other. Ended up 61-58 in favor of Madison. Wild game! I could be wrong, but I think it is inevitable that Young will be the starter, sooner or later.

Here's what's not fair to Vince. He continually has to practice with the 2nd team O against the 1st team D, while Mock is with the 1st team O against the 2nd team D. They never switch.

Then people come away from practice, coaches included, sounding very studied and sober with their observation that "Chance Mock clearly runs the offense better."

Well, sure he does. He's throwing to Roy Williams and Bo Scaife, playing behind the #1 O-Line, going against talented but usually very young players in the secondary. Vince, on the other hand, is scrambling for his life, throwing to receivers that are almost always well covered by the likes of Nathan Vasher. And on top of that, whenever he attempts to use his great running ability, the play is whistled dead.

How could Chance Mock NOT look better in practice?

29x281, there is probably a LOT of truth to that. I don't know what kind of person Young is, but if my gut is right, we could be looking at the "Michael Jordan" of football. I may well be all wet, but this kid really impresses me.

I look at it this way.Texas has two QBs that were both top notch recruits,Two very good RBs(Benson has like 6 fummbles in 500 carries, but that's fumblin too much),probably the best recievin corps in the nation,a big strong O line, and pretty stout defense, plus all kinds of depth.I like their chances at a national title this year than any other year.It don't matter who the starters are as long as they keep on winning.HOOK EM HORNS!!

sinton66
09-01-2003, 09:58 AM
Good point, 75. If Texas were to play for the title against, hmmmmmmm, let's say Florida State, I know who I'd want the starter to be. wink

I'd be happy with either one in there. But I think Chance should be the man for now.Either way they're both makin each other better.

Young looked great running and passing the ball. We will have to see what happens. He looked great while he was in but we have to remember he was playing against a tired and demoralized NM team that is much better than the final score indicated. GO HORNS!

I'm not just a huge Razorbacks fan myself, but that's a rather harsh characterization of Arkansas.
