Diboll clinches district
DIBOLL - With a district title within reach, Diboll's Jermichael Finley wasn't about to let it slip away. Finley poured in 32 points and grabbed 23 boards as the Lumberjacks used a fourth-quarter rally to overcome the Hudson Hornets 61-56 in front of a packed house in Diboll Friday night.
His breakaway slam at the buzzer put an exclamation mark on Diboll's comeback win and gave the Lumberjacks the District 20-3A title.
Diboll's win also put the Hornets, who led almost the entire game, into a must-win situation when they host Newton.
Austin Fischer led the way for the Hornets with 15 points and six assists.
The Hornets led by as many as 14 points and held a 45-39 lead going into the final period. Diboll drew closer with a Finley layup and a Lakendrick Oliphant jumper.
The Lumberjacks eventually took their first lead of the night on a Finley basket that made the score 48-47 with 4:30 remaining.
Diboll eventually led 55-51 with two minutes remaining before Jason Ashworth hit a pair of free throws. Diboll's Chad Chittum answered with a bucket before Jon White hit a free throw to make the score 57-54.
Finley came down with a basket before Ashworth's layup cut Diboll's lead to 59-56 with 14 seconds remaining.
The Lumberjacks missed both free throws, giving Hudson a chance to win. However, Diboll came up with the steal and Finley finished a layup with a slam to make the final 61-56.
