Yes, Pudlugger, the coach controversy added an "extra element" to the contest!: Continued - as the justice system does its duty pursuing this illegal, indefensible act, the proud community of Wharton shows their "class" by rallying around their DISTRICT CHAMP FOOTBALL TEAM after a clean, hard-fought game against the Rice Raiders - a contest free of incident and controversy, one fought fairly on the field with the numbers on the scoreboard determing the victor! Wharton-23,Rice-18, CHEERS!MOM! Maybe now some of you will be able to realize (since your coach now has "less" of a winning season) that ALL citizens are subject to the laws, policies & procedures, and social and moral norms of our society!

DugOutCoach, No one ever said or believed that Coach Roark is above the law. No one believes that he should go unpunished for what did happen including Coach Roark himself. It doesn't matter how many games we have won or lost, that doesn't change they way that his team feels about him or respects him. The Raiders could never win another game and everyone would still be behind him 100% percent. It's not about winning it's about how much respect and love these kids have for this man. Go Raiders!!

whtfbplaya, believe it or not that is the way it is!!! Sure, everyone wants to win but it doesn't change a thing about how this team feels about their coach. But you can believe what you want, it reallly doesn't matter to us anyway.

I have to give Wharton their due, that's how a team with that level of talent should play every game. If Wharton had Rice's coaching staff they'd be State Champs! The only difference in the game was that Wharton made the big plays when they needed to and Rice couldn't come up with them. Good Luck to both teams in the playoffs and represent the district well!

Why is it that when a team wins that nobody was giving a chance in blue blazes to win, then it's because of something other than they were just simply better? Why does anything else have to enter into the picture, or even matter at this point? Give the Wharton boys what is due them, a big pat on the back and a "job well done". They played a darn fine game and did what EVERYONE was saying couldn't be done. Forget the "coach scandal" and anything else except the fact that Rice simply got beat by a team that outplayed them. I was at the game and saw a couple of Rice players go down. I hope that no one was hurt seriously. I ache whenever I see this, especially now that I have a son playing football. My thoughts always turn to the parents of that child, afterall every player on every team is someone's son. Rice fought their hearts out, and my hat is off to them for their effort. They never gave up. They showed a lot of heart, but like it has been said so many times, anybody can win at any given time. I was concerned that the game might get ugly, but that never happened. Both sides played a very clean game. Wharton does not have an easy schedule in the playoffs, but God willing, they'll come through just fine. The boys have the talent and hopefully they are peaking at just the right time.

CheerMom - It appears that you continue to broach the the real issues and concerns that are beyond the illegality of Roark's indefensible act. To respect someone means to hold them in high esteem - to appreciate the worth of and to hold in high regard. Your "respected Coach Roark" violated TEA and school district policies and state and federal laws and there are possibly infractions of the UIL Codes. (Employee Standards of Conduct, Federal Safe and Drug-free Campus Act, State felony charges involving the injury of a police officer) The point being that if you and, as you say, "the team" still respect this individual after the above violations, it is obvious that the educational system serving these youth as well as many parents and community members have failed to teach what is lawful, ethical and respectful in our society! (When he gives advice to the students I only hope he now prefaces it with: "Do as I say and not as I do!"- it is very hard to maintain respect when you don't practice what you preach!)

I feel sorry for the people who only have one track minds, have no emotions, and think they are so perfect, and think they havent done anything wrong. No one is perfect. And DugOutCoach maybe you need to bring out your bible and read about foregivness.. and i think it is VERY childish of whoever keeps on bringing up the whole situation about Roark. We have all heard enough. We dont need yall to tell us what happend. And plus i think the only reason why yall keep bringing up the matter is beacuse yall are tryin to make yourselves look better. Cuz thats the only way yall can. Because yall cant compare not to just our talent but our class.(even if yall might not think so). But that really doesnt matter. Cuz what does matter is how we are,and no matter what you say and think its never gonna change.

First of all I want to congratulate the Wharton Tigers on a great win Friday night. You played very hard and earned a quality win against a quality team.

As for the situation with our coach, I've silently read sooo many comments about this issue. Here are one man's thoughts:

People make mistakes every day, some not so bad, some worse. I'm pretty sure no human being is above making these mistakes, including the posters on this message board. Spouses cheat on one another, a kid gets caught smoking weed, and people get caught up in huge lies about huge issues. When these situations arise, a person has two options. 1. Get rid of the problem or 2. Work it out. Many of you are obviously from the get rid of the problem school of thought. If you catch your spouse cheating, you would throw him/her out. Catch your kid screwing up, kick him/her out of the house. That's fine, that's YOUR choice and it's YOUR life.

There are however other people who would take this mishap as a serious mistake and they would choose to work with you to resolve this problem and in doing so put up with all of the ridicule and embarrassment that goes with doing so. This is the type of people I hope I have in my circle of family and friends. You get the person help, you work with them and put them on a real short leash until that trust is earned again. This is the more difficult road to take and it's the road the Rice C.I.S.D. board has chosen. It's OUR school, OUR community and OUR choice.

The most fallible comment I've seen about this situation is that our school district does not have the backbone to fire the man. On the contrary, the road our school district has chosen takes bigger balls than any other road they could have chosen. If they fired Coach that Monday following the incident, this would not be talked about any more. The issue would be gone unless Coach were to be found innocent and then he could sue the pants off of the school district for a wrongful termination. We would not have had all of the public ridicule that has taken place though.

Some have said the Coach should resign. I disagree there as well. The sole breadwinner of a home just up and quitting his job without a backup plan and without putting up with a fight would be more irresponsible to his family than anything he did that Friday night in Wharton.

There's been other issues presented that are far too large in number to count. It all comes down to this though, it is currently our school district's decision. If he's convicted of a felony, I guarantee he's gone, mainly because he will loose his teaching certificate more than likely. Until then, I stand by my elected officials decision to keep Coach. He took a chance coming to a school district that hadn't won a thing in football ever. In that time, he has done a remarkable job turning around our program and working with the youth of our community. Now that he's up against the wall, we are taking a chance on him. Laugh at us, talk trash about us, and disagree all you want. It's our school district's decision to keep our Coach and you are entitled to disagree if you wish.

This is one man's opinion and I dont plan on defending my thought process to anyone so dont expect an answer to any posts directed at me. Im mad and saddened by what supposedly happened but Im willing to give Coach a second chance, period. There's many wonderful things in my life that I personally would not have if I had not received a few second chances in life. I support the school's decision to try to work it out.

The tigers showed Friday nite they could play as a team. Never once did those kids care about the controversy--they just wanted to beat the raiders fairly. In some ways the team showed more maturity than some adults do. Im so proud of the whole team!!!

It seems Kellen always gets the recognition but there so many others who deserve it,too: Trey Jones and his quiet leadership, Raymond Hudson who wants nothing more than to do his best on and off the field, Terence"Tink" Ward who waited for his time to shine(and he did Friday nite),Ben Evans and Demestrice Doggins who make such crucial plays,Anthony Fira who would tackle anything, Justin Baldridge(my fav.lib aide)who played the best defense I've seen in a long time, Courtney Taylor who is always there,Steven, Stuart,JuJU,Clay,Todd, Daren, Darren, Albert, and all the rest of the team. Friday nite was one of the best games I've seen in my 51 years. I thank you and it's been a joy knowing all of you guys!

Whrtntig1,

You are so right. There is a whole team out there and they played as one team Friday night. I know most of the boys too and am proud of each and everyone, no matter if they played one second or the entire football game. They did finally mesh as a team and it showed. They are an outstanding group of young men on and off of the field.

Hey Cheermom, I surely hope you can make Wharton/Cuero game Friday night, we will be at the Edna and Rice games Saturday cheering for the Cowboys and Raiders. But when you come Friday be carefully and watch out for the Wharton/Cuero Cheerleaders, Band and Drill team members. You may what to watch from a safe distance
........the end zone. Just bring a lawn chair we will be looking for you.

I wish you would finally realize that the beef was/is not with the Wharton Tigers and Rice Raiders.....it is the WPD and your AD.

GET OVER IT. eek!

TigerFan71, you might have wanted to read msgp's comment on the cheerleader situation before you put your foot in mouth (on the Kellen Heard thread). You act like I'm the one who made the decision. Sometimes people's stupidity just amazes me!!

Cheermom,

Cool it! You're not helping the situation by calling anyone stupid. That only serves to insight individuals, not cool things down and smooth them over. It is time, and way overdue, for things to be put in the past, even all the snippy comments and pettiness. Now, can't we all shake hands and just get along?

Congratulations are in order for ALL teams who made the playoffs. I wish only success for everyone, even you guys from Rice. After all, there are THREE teams representing 28-3a. May each one go out and make District 28-3a very proud!
