Connally advances to area playoffs with 7th straight win, 33-7
By JOHN WERNER Tribune-Herald staff writer
Making its first playoff appearance in five years, Connally certainly didn't act like a team experiencing stage fright.

The Cadets played like they owned the stage as they blew away Caldwell, 33-7, in the Class 3A Division I bi-district playoffs Friday night at WISD Stadium.

With Lance Loftin hitting 16 of 26 passes for 313 yards, the Cadets won their seventh straight game to improve to 10-1. Connally will face Jasper Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the area playoffs at Sam Houston State in Huntsville.

"Lance did a great job of spreading the ball around," said Connally coach Stephen Burrow. "We've got a lot of athletic receivers, and when they catch the ball they can really run. When we can use our speed like that things work out for us."

The Cadets' array of offensive weapons left an impression on Caldwell coach Rick Cobia, whose team finished with a 7-4 record.

"I've been coaching 21 years and that includes time in Class 5A," Cobia said. "But that was a very talented group of kids we faced. I'm impressed with their composure and their big-play capabilities. Our kids played hard and tried to stay with them, but we just faced a very good team."

Loftin liberally spread the ball to seven different receivers. With receivers coming from all different directions out of Connally's spread offense, Caldwell's defense appeared overwhelmed. With Loftin piling up a team-high 86 yards rushing, the Cadets rolled up 511 yards total offense.

From Waco Tribune:

"----Connally vs. #7 Jasper----

Connally gets its stiffest test of the season against Jasper at 7:30 tonight at Bowers Stadium in Huntsville.

The Cadets (10-1) have been superb in turning around a program that won just six games in the previous three seasons. But reaching the second week of the playoffs is routine for the Bulldogs (9-2).

Jasper made the state semifinals in 2002, and the Bulldogs' seniors were freshmen the last time the program failed to produce 10 wins.

However, Jasper lost some key components from its state semifinal team. Offensive lineman Jorrie Adams and defensive lineman Joseph Bryant went to Texas A&M, and the Bulldogs also had to replace starters at quarterback and running back.

Jasper won its first three playoff games last season by a combined score of 113-0, but last week the Bulldogs slipped past Mexia, 20-9.

Connally has held opponents to 12 points per game, while Jasper is scoring 32. But the Bulldogs managed just 26 points in their two losses.

If the Cadets' offense keeps producing, Connally could pull off a huge victory.

Connally 31, Jasper 28 "
