The UIL currently allows only 5A and 6A schools to conduct spring football practices. With the growing cutoffs of enrollment over the last 50 years, it's beyond the point where 4A schools can support spring football as well.
The UIL cutoff for the bottom of the state's second-highest classification (today's 5A) in 1976 was 550. The bottom of the third-highest classification (today's 4A) in 2023 is 545 and will be higher in the next cycle. The state of Texas has basically grown by a whole classification since then.
Therefore, it's self-evident that the rules that governed the current 5A and 6A should be extended to cover 4A in modern times. 4A should be allowed to play spring football starting in the spring of 2024.
