Does anyone know why the South Oak Cliff players helmets had "Mecca" on each side?

MECCA - a place regarded as a center for specified group, activity, or interest.
SOC High School is known as "The MECCA" for a reason. There's no such thing as facing an opponent alone. The bleachers on game day show without a doubt the community has your back.

Dave Campbell did an article in their 2022 summer magazine that gave some insight on this very topic.

SOC was the first integrated HS in Oak Cliff, basically what you saw from Dallas Carter in the late 80s and now on to Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville, Lancaster has roots at South Oak Cliff so its the "mother school" that people are coming back to...these quotes below are from the summer edition of DCTF when we did a cover story on SOC

“Everything that maybe came from Dallas Lincoln, Booker T and Roosevelt, everything that was patterned after that. When you start talking about the Carters or Kimballs and things like that, the Hillcrests, other schools, it was patterned after SOC as far as integration,” Todd said. “This is where the African-Americans were actually moved to first once they started leaving those other areas.”

“You had to pass through SOC because it was first in Oak Cliff and Oak Cliff is the biggest part of Dallas,” Ward said. “As everybody from Oak Cliff had spread, somebody within their roots, if they’re from Dallas, went to SOC: Granny, mama, uncle or whoever.”
