What determines what classification the private schools in the UIL are placed in ?

Nothing. Private schools are not allowed in the UIL unless there is no other sanctioning body that will let them in, like the two Jesuit schools. In that instance, they are automatically 6A. But there are about a dozen other privates lining up to jump into UIL 6A and Austin says no. Still trying to figure.

ADD: I suppose since those other schools are still in TAPPS, they have a sanctioning home. But I say let them into UIL as 6As if they want to swing it.

Let me clarify - I was asking about a public open enrollment school (refering to Gateway Prepatory College/High School in GeorgetownTx.) I thought it was a private school but after reading up on it, it is a Charter School (a difference).
Gateway is in the 4A-1 District 13 classification. Talking to someone who's kids attend Gateway-Georgetown about alignment classification. They said that Gateway per UIL guidelines is classified the same as the other high schools within the Georgetown area. I said that's not true because Georgetown and G East View are 5A schools. They thought they would be 5A this next realignment. Being Gateway is not the size of 4A #'s how did it get classified 4A-1 ?

1. Charter Schools
a. Charter schools may be reassigned to a higher conference if actual
enrollment is larger than the submitted enrollment projections.
b. Charter Schools shall not be assigned to a football district unless they
provide evidence to UIL staff that they have participated previously.
c. Charters schools located within the boundaries of a school district with 3 or more high schools shall
be assigned to the same conference as the high school in that school
district with the lowest enrollment, unless the charter school’s
enrollment qualifies it for a higher conference.
i. A charter school elevated in conference under this rule shall
receive an automatic appeal to UIL staff related to conference
assignment.
ii. A charter school may be assigned to different conferences for
different divisions of UIL activities. UIL divisions are
academics, music and athletics
iii. Decisions of UIL staff may be appealed to the District

This would mean that Brownsville IDEA Frontier, Brownsville Jubilee, Edinburg Quest, Brownsville IDEA Riverview, Pharr Vanguard, IDEA Alamo all would have to be elevated to 5A

They've been competing in 3A for the most part, correct? I know the Brownsville IDEA schools are in a soccer district with Port Isabel (4A), but are 3A for basketball.

None of them have football teams...yet.
