I found out that the final score between Calallen and Robstown played Tuesday night was 3 to 2 in favor of Calallen. These two teams are ranked in the top ten in 4A baseball and should be heard from in the playoffs. I agree Old that this is a good post to list all the baseball and softball scores and I will use this one to post scores on from now on.

Well I see that the big gruge game ended with Wharton over Sweeny 12-1 in softball. Casey Matzke(a freshman) finished them off in 5 innings. In the Fastpitch Express Tournament West beat Everman 13-3. I was looking at 23-3A I would say i's a tossup between Navasota and Columbus, with Bellville still capable of winning it ...We have a list of girls that hit home runs, can you think of any that can be added to this list for this year?

Bridge City boys beat Orangefield 8-1 tonight. Jamie Knight looked great on the mound. Also, Broc Haymon, a phenomenol freshmen, came in and pitched several fine innings....The girls had Hardin 12-0 in the fourth, and subbed heavily and it ended up 12-2. They play in a stiff tournament tomorrow in Sulphur, Louisiana at 2:30pm, 4:00 pm, and 7:00pm. They will be playing some of the better teams in Louisiana. They open against Port Barre, in their first game and then play a team from Lafayette, LA. .....Can we have some 3A scores from around the State for both boys and girls?

Thanks for the reports! WTX, sounds like a good win, who was the team that you beat?....Phil C., Sinton sure has an admirable overall program. I laughed when you said their was a wind-in-your-face softball park for the girls. At Bridge City, it's the same way-the prevailing win faces the girls at bat. Now the Baseball park is situated with the win at the back of the batters. Yes, the lights are twice as illuminent at the baseball park as they are at the softball park. Same ole story everywhere. I am fixing to leave for Sulphur, La for the Girls Tournament, in a few minutes.

LaGrange beats Sealy 5-2 in 10 innings friday night. Great game by both teams. Zoch from LG pitched 8 innings and Kozelsky pitched last 2. One game i will never forget.

Barbers Hill - 13, Cleveland - 0, Northcutt pitched 5 innings of no-hit ball for the Eagles, Dolan hit his 2nd HR of the district season. Several players had big/multiple hits. This was the second straight strong outing by the Eagle pitching staff, Jr. Aaron Bazan had a 2 hit 5 inning performance on the mound earlier in the week. The Eagles appear to be rounding into shape as the district season begins.

According to the Corpus Christi Caller Times Natalia beat George West 3 - 0 which is a real shocker because George West was a powerful 3A softball team last year and had most of their players back and are in 2A where I was confident they would make a state championship run. I still feel they will turn it around and get into the playoffs but that is a real shocker but of course I don't know much about Natalia and they may be better than I thought.

Llano had an 11-1 record, but now is 12-4. They beat Pearl 7-3. Wimberley beat Jim Ned 10-1 and stand at 6-7. Burnet beat Lago Vista 8-6 and stand at 8-3. Burnet plays Llano in their first district game friday....that should fortell some for both their teams.

I look for Wharton to be tough in that District. I went over to the Houston area last year and watched Buna beat Sweeny in an Area game. It was touted to be a good contest, but Buna the runnerup up in 21-3A prevailed with ease on Chase Tuckers pitching. I understand that Chase is the designated hitter for Buna this year and may be back to pitch against Bridge City in District. He had an operation and it foiled his pitching for early in the year. He is a great youth with a lot of talent....Rice consolidated had a bad season 2-19 and District 1-11, but they mostly have Juniors and Sophomores coming back. Can some one tell us about Palacious, Edna, Needville baseball?

I won't have any thing to post on Sinton baseball or softball until tomorrow. The two games scheduled tonight against West Oso was postponed until tomorrow night. The weather was great today and yesterday and is supposed to be tomorrow so I think they did it to give the two fields an extra day to dry out.

Softball: Hamshire-Fannett 8 Hardin-Jefferson 4...Boys Baseball: Bridge City beat Hardin-Jefferson for the second time. It was 7-1 in the sixth inning, and in the last inning, Coach Moore put in a Freshman and the score ended 7-4. In the first time around, BC beat H-J 7-2. They were the 22-3A Champs last year, but with most of the team back, they are not fareing that well against Bridge City, over in 21-3A...Bridge City girls play Kountze at 5:00 pm at home. The Boys baseball team plays at Hardin at 4:00 pm Friday.

Pirate also the Sinton girls' JV team (mostly freshmen) won over West Oso JV team 15 to 0. In the varsity softball in District 30 -3A Ingleside beat Taft 4 to 3 and Aransas Pass Beat Mathis 6 to 5. The teams in softball in District 30 3A are fairly evenly matched as you can tell with all the one point games (Sinton beat Mathis last week by one run) so it is a big fight in that district with the biggest game this week between Sinton and Aransas Pass. Five of the teams will be fighting for three playoff spots (Sinton, Aransas Pass, Ingleside, Mathis and Taft) and even West Oso has the potential to pull the big upset and affect the outcome. Hey Pirate was that your brother calling you at the Sinton game with updates. I almost went up to ask him and introduce myself but the boys had the game well in hand so I went to the JV girls softball game which had the same results. I will introduce myself to him next time I see him if it was because he kept calling in reports to someone. I was wearing my USA cap last night instead of the usual Spurs cap because of the Iraq situation.

Bridge City Softball: BC 16 Kountze 0, stopped in 3 innings. It's easy to see why they are ranked #2 in 3A Texas Softball.... I watched the BC 7th & 8th grade girls win EVERY one of the races, except Orangefield won two of the four hurdles. The Select Teams, year round softball players, won all the short races while Coach Cody Knight's Cross Country girls literally won many of the 1st, 2nd, 3 rd, and 4th places in the 400m and longer races. The 7th and 8th grade relay teams won by great leads....Buna and Kountze were the other two teams at the meet.

The Bridge City Cardinals baseball team took out Hardin 15-0 this evening. Coach Moore played a lot of new people....Hamshire-Fannett girls beat Hardin 12-2. Earlier this week, H-F beat Buna 6-4. Their only loss in District was 9-0 to Bridge City. BC has won 16 games and lost two, but in the losses they did not pitch their All State Senior Laura Gremillion. It is interesting, Laura was an All State in 4A for Bridge City when she was a Freshman......I would guess that Splendora on one side of the Region III bracketing will face Bridge City on the other side of bracketing for the Region III Championship(and enter the top four tournament). That game would put Melissa Collins against Laura Gremillion in a real Pitchers duel!

In varsity tonight the Sinton Pirates over Aransas Pass 10 to 0 and the Sinton Lady Pirates over Aransas Pass 2 to 1. Also the JV Lady Pirates defeated the Aransas Pass Lady JVs 10 to 6.

Phil C
03-21-2003, 11:19 PM
Tonight I got to the Sinton Lady Pirate JV game against Aransas Pass JVs and AP had just scored 6 runs in the top of the first. Then the Lady Pirate JVs scored two runs in the first, one run in the second, 4 runs in the third to take the lead and 3 runs in the fourth to get ten runs and their defense shut out Aransas Pass after the shaky start. The game was called for time after four innings. In the varsity game the Sinton Lady Pirates got two runs and the Lady Aransas Pass Panthers got one run and that was all the scoring as both pitchers and defenses played a good game the rest of the way. Both teams had chances to score again but great defensive play by both teams stopped the scoring in a well played defensive game. In the boys varsity I got there at about the start of the sixth inning and the game was well in hand and Adrian Alaniz was pitching so it looked like he got the shutout. I don't know if the boys JV played tonight so I don't have a score on them.

I was just looking at the polls and they are fairly accurate except for one thing. After comparing who folks have played, in Region III-- Lorena, Barbers Hill, Bridge City and Jasper have played harder opponents than LaGrange. I think all of these teams are better than LaGrange in Region III.

Yes, BH 146 I saw that. If I understood correctly BC and BH have swapped wins now. It looks like in cross country, It may well be between these two! BC has a young team, but Coach Cody Knight is building an awesome 7th, 8th, 9th, grade programing. BC placed high in Cross country in state last year with some extra young runners. Congratulations to BH!.... maybe that is why both schools are winners in a lot of endeavors: we actually have a lot in common.....BC placed fifth in the 3A cross country meet last year, we were thinking Elgin would be the one to beat, guess maybe BH will be in the hunt also.

Pirate the Sinton Lady Pirates played great against Taft. We weren't really 11 runs better than they were but the Lady Pirates were playing great and the Taft Ladies had an obviously off night because they made several costly errors. The Ingleside Lady Mustangs beat the Aransas Pass Lady Panthers last night 4 to 2. This puts the Sinton Lady Pirates one game ahead of Ingleside in district (because Sinton beat Ingleside earlier) with a big showdown this Friday night. If the Sinton Lady Pirates win they will be at least two games ahead of everyone in district with four games to go. If they don't win they will still be tied for district anyway with a good shot at the playoffs. Game time in Sinton this Friday at 7:00 P.M.

GIRLS SOFTBALL tonight: Bridge City 10 Orangefield 0...Orangefield will come in second in the 21-3A softball. When Senior star Julia Curl had to have an operation two weeks ago on her foot, Sophomore Jessica Sartin came in to play First and has batted 7 for 8, with a number of doubles! Jessica is 6' 0" and very strong. Her father, David, was one of the big excellent linemen for BC way back when they won State in 1965-so she gets it naturally. Jessica Sartin has been glued to two films on hitting by Mike Epstein, and is developing a good rotational potential. With ace Gremillion out for a couple of weeks with a hurt thumb,, Meagan Godwin, the other ace, has really smoked them from the mound. We have had ONLY one Senior, Jacqueline Eikenhorst, on the field for the last several games, yet they 10-run ruled the two teams that will come in 2nd and 3rd in the District....Do we have some other Tuesday night scores coming in for baseball and softball?

Softball 23-3A. Bellville soundly defeated 2nd place Columbus 11-3 on Friday, thanks to a 3-run 4th to take the lead and a 7-run 6th to ice it. After a scare on Tuesday (10-8) to Sealy to end the first round, the Brahmanettes are 6-0 one game into the second round and are in the driver's seat. Columbus and Sealy round out the top 3. First-year coach Ross Aschenbeck has been a big hit in B-town and has the girls lovin' the game. There are 6 pitchers on the roster, but nobody is throwing BB's. They just keep us in the game until the bats come alive. It's exciting to watch and never boring. Bellville22's sister was the star Friday, pitching the win and going 4-4 with two doubles (one off the top of the fence) and 4 RBI.

The H-F team put it all together with homeruns, timely hits, etc:...Jamey Knight hit a homerun as first batter up, only to have an out, when the Umpire said he did not touch homeplate-it went down hill from there! 21-3A Softball: Bridge City 5 Hardin-Jefferson 1 friday night....RBarker: What was the Girls score between Splendora and Barbers Hill Friday night?Old Card, hate to hear about the upset but that may help the team once the playoffs start. the BH girls lost 5-1. the following is a write up of the game from the BH Sports Report:

For 6 2/3 innninges, Barbers Hill matched play for play with the #1 ranked Splendora Wildcats. But with 2 outs, Splendora was able to capitalize on a BH miscue to score 4 unearned runs and defeat Barbers Hill 5-1. Barbers Hill is now 7-3 in district play and 10-7 overall.

Without a doubt, this game was a pitching battle. Naw, it was just a battle as both teams made plays in the field to keep the game knotted at 1. Both pitchers did have to reach back at times to get out of jams. The Wildcats and the Eagles both left 6 runners stranded on base. Though Collins struck out 13 to Gonzalezes 9, Collins gave up 6 six base on balls while Gonzalez did not issue a free pass.

Barbers Hill scored first against all-state pitcher, Melissa Collins. Crystal Gonzalez lead of for BH with a single to left. Then Katie Blaylock and Tina Robinson drew walks to load the bases. Amber Richardson, who was running for Gonzalez, scored on an single by Rachael Rouse. With the bases still loaded, Collins struck out the next two batters to retire the side.

Splendora answered quickly in the top of the second. The first batter of the inning lead off with a single and scored on a double by the next batter. Gonzalez then limited the damage by striking out the next 3 batters.

That would be all to runs until Splendora scored in the top of the 7th. Twice Collins shut down the Eagles after BH had advanced a runner to second with one out. Gonzalez had to battle out of a 2nd and 3rd situation with no outs as she struck out 2 in a row and got the last batter to pop out to first.

Then came the seventh. The first batter of the inning gounded out short to first and Gonzalez struck out batter number 2. The ninth batter in the order then bunted for a single. BH had a chance to get out of the inning, but an infield error allowed the runners to advance to second and 3rd. Consecutive by the Wildcats plated runs 3 and 4 while the fourth run of inning scored when a pop fly fell in between 3 fielders. Melissa Collins then struck out 2 of the last three BH to end the game.

What grade is Ms. Gonzalez in?...Boy, we have no excuses about the loss to H-F, they had proved in the BC Minefield tournament that they can play ball with anyone. They have one excellent pitcher and a good, but sometine erratic defense. That new Coach is trying to eliminate the inconsistent playing, because he has the talent to win and win big after District......BH sure has a good team every year, Byrd is one of the best Coaches around in 3A.

I found out that in softball last night Ingleside beat Mathis 5 to 0 and that last last Friday night Taft beat Ingleside 6 to 0. Ingleside and Aransas Pass are tied for second in district at 6 -3 and will be playing this Friday night at Aransas Pass at 7:00 P.M. in their final district game. The loser will probably get third place in district unless Taft can upset Sinton next Tuesday night in Taft and then they would be tied with the loser for third place. If they are tied with Aransas Pass I think Aransas Pass would be in because they beat Taft twice during the season and I think that is the tie breaker but I could be wrong. If they are tied with Ingleside they will probably have to have a playoff game for sure for third place since both teams won one game from each other.

In 21-3A baseball Anahuac had Hamshire-Fannett down 8-2 in the top of the 3rd. Again H-F raced back with 16 runs(10 in one inning) to win 18-8. They put together 13 singles and one double. This is the epitome of an inconsistant team with a 14-7; 7-2 record. They are very deadly when they are on!....Broc Haymon is now 4-1- as a Freshman pitcher, Bridge City is proud to have him. Hunter Hays(Sophomore) went 3 for 4 with only one home run this game. OF is anchored by Luke Agerton and Williams in baseball; these two also were instrumental in bringing OF to second place in 21-3A football.

The Sinton Lady Pirates completed a perfect 10 - 0 record in district 30-3A softball. They won tonight against a very tough and determined Taft team 2 - 1 in a tough defensive struggle. Both pitchers had outstanding night and it came down to one error that enabled the Lady Pirates to win. Taft had to win to have a shot at the playoffs and they played with a lot of heart. Few teams would have beaten the Lady Greyhounds tonight. They have to be one of the best none playoff teams in the state. Ingleside and Aransas Pass are playing tonight and the winner will get second place and the loser will get third place for the playoffs but I don't know how that game came out.

BASEBALL: What a good game, it was BC 8 H-J 3 with two outs in the seventh, when H-J knocked a 3 run homerun to come back making the final score Bridge City 8 Hardin-Jefferson 6. I looks like BC will take the District while Hamshire-Fannett and Hardin-Jefferson have one more game that should determine the 2nd and 3rd spot. Softball: Bridge City 12 Kountze 0 in the 3rd inning-that was the last score that I saw. BC started their JV Pitcher Elena Clinton, who was doing a great job. She also contributed on offense with a double followed by a triple at her two times at bat in the first three innings.

Old three teams from each district make the playoffs and they are the district champions of course and the second and third place teams. That makes a total of 96 teams that get in the playoffs. The second and third place teams play each other the first playoff week and then the field is down to 64 (district champions get a bye week that week).

Thanks for the information Old Cardinal and MiddleageCardinal. After battling Splendora in softball, I thought we had a shot of advancing in the bracket to meet up with BC. But life can be fickle. Supposedly, we are losing a couple of players to grades this week. And tomorrow is Prom in which 3 players have decided that a 3 o'clock game is not early enough. Caldwell WILL play Splendora for Regional finals. They play their area game in the last week of august or beginning of may against the third place team in district 20 (Diboll or Lufkin-Hudson who play tonight) and the second place team from District 19 (Fairfield). Then they WILL advance to regional quaters and will probably face Kirbyville. Region 3 is the toughest of all the regions. The winner of every district except two are in the top ten in state. 1. Splendora 2. Bridge City 4. Kirbyville 8. Caldwell 9. La Grange (If they beat Elgin) 10. Robinson. Whoever wins the regional final out of these teams will more than likely win state.

Old Cardinal

To Dulce 04: I respectfully submit to you that Caldwell will not play Splendora for the Regional Finals; but to become ONE of the Regional finalist....Yes the winner of the upper bracket will most probably be Caldwell, Kirbyville, or Splendora. Remember in the Final game that determines the Region III Championship, one of you-- will have to face Bridge City, or someone else, from the other bracket. Check the UIL, under Softball Brackets, for 3A, its all layed out there. Dulce 04, don't sell Kirbyville short, Holly Tankersley strikes out a ton of batters and is as fast as Melissa Collins from Splendora. If you take them it will take some outstanding Offense. Holly can also knock it over the fence pretty regularly. She is another Select team player from the Beaumont Blast training program.

I'm not selling Kirbyville out short because I have heard great things about them but I have a lot of confidence in my team. Whatever happens will happen but I personally think that Caldwell has the potential to win against any opponet they come across. If we do beat Kirbyville, which would be the Regional Quarterfinal game, we would then face Splendora for Regional Semi-finals. We might not be as high in the state as the other teams we are going to face but we are still ranked and sometimes, that just doesn't matter.

BASEBALL: Hardin-Jefferson slipped a 2-1 win out over Hamshire-Fannett to give them 2nd place in 21-3A. With Bridge City winning District in both Girls and Boy diamond sports' that does not lessen the potent play that the other 21-3A teams might well exhibit in Bracket Post season.

How could you not know Sinton had a god baseball team. They had been a State Powerhouse in baseball for almost two decades. In that time Sinton has won three state championships('88, '89, '02). I can not believe that you didn't know they won it all last year. They had other state appeareances as well. Coach K has almost always had a team that went to the playoff's except for two, one that I know of.

Thanks RBarker, On baseball- Bellville, Columbus, and La Grange are good transfers into Region III. Only Yoakum and Sinton were better, last year, while they all were in Region IV..... On Softball, Hamshire-Fannett is an inconsistent team. They are one of the two teams that beat Bridge City this year. Meagan Godwin, was having an uncharacteristically bad day at the mound, very early in the preseason. Instead of throwing in Senior Laura Gremillion; Coach Lemon's let them try to work it out. I think the Coach, wanted them to learn they could get beat. In the next two matches which were District games, Bridge City beat them bad, I think they 10-run ruled them both times and Meagan Godwin redeemed herself..... Orangefield, 21-3A runnerup in softball, has a great attitude, and Cleveland will have their hands full,I would guess..... BC only beat them(OF), 3-0 the first time around, and they 10-run ruled them, the second time.

It didn't help that BC only managed two base hits (Godwin & Gremillion) and the defense made two errors in this tourney game against H-F that only went 4 innings.

Agreed MiddleageCard, If you look at the big picture-that first game against H-F went only 4 innings, and also, their other loss(1-0) was a tournament scrimmage that lasted only 46 minutes, against a Louisiana team, over at the Sulphur, LA Tournament.... These two loses were chalked up, and are their only loses thusfar, in two short timeframe, tournament scrimmages controlled by the clock.

Dist. 30-AAA:

Sinton 200 200 1xx 5/5/0
Mathis 020 000 0xx 2/2/1

WP-Adrian Alaniz, 14 K's & he helped his cause with a MONSTER HR in the top of the 7th with 2 outs!

Adrian struggled early, the 2nd inning was especially tough & they (Mathis) scored their 2 runs & then his focus was back & of the next 16 batters faced, he struck out 9.

Sinton keeps a perfect record in District 10-0 & are District Champs! Overall record 20-4.

Congrats to the Mathis Pirates who played a heck of a game tonight. Their ace pitcher struck out 6 of our batters & had our guys flying out and grounding out (drove Coach K nuts). They had just enough tonight though for that all important "W". Good luck to both squads in the playoffs.

Great softball scrimmage between LaPorte and Bridge City. It looked like it might be a runaway in the first inning. BC scored, and then #10, the LaPorte catcher, knocked a homerun, with folks on, making it 5-1. The game ended 7-3 LaPorte, as they played for the last 6 innings, two to two in scoring....With a City(Greater Houston) of 4 million and 500+ good select team year round players to choose from; each year, somehow--Katy, LaPorte, Fort Bend Clementes and Fort Bead Elkins, and a couple of others, end up with the lion's share of the best of the best, on their 5A teams. LaPorte has a great 5A team! I can't see Bridge City meeting anyone in 3A with the overall caliber of players that LaPorte fields. It was a great scrimmage with two excellent pitchers from each team. Meagan Godwin did a great job for 4 innings and then Senior Laura Gremillion came in an 3 up and 3 downed them, for the last three innings. I salute, Coach Sissy Lemons, for scheduling a potent team like LaPorte just before the Bracket play begins...

I agree Old, great LaPorte team. I agree with you in that BC probably will not see as good a team throughout the play-offs. They will probably see the pitching but not a team like that. What could have been?...in the first inning the 3 run homer hit the foul pole (sorry, fair pole). What a difference a few inches would have made and the two runs that scored in the 4th off of the error at first that would have ended the inning. Overall, LaPorte has a great team and probably would beat BC 9 out of 10 but I don't think our girls were on their best game last night. Also, not to single anyone out on the LaPorte team but you are right about that #10. She is a great, patient, solid hitter.

The Bearcats started the season by losing six of their first seven games. But how a team starts is not nearly as important as how it finishes.

Pilot Point (13-8, 7-3) ran the table in its second run through the five other District 9-3A teams. The Bearcats not only won their last five games — they blew out the competition — 9-3 over Whitesboro, 15-7 over Pottsboro, 17-7 over Van Alstyne, 12-0 over Gainesville and 5-1 over Celina.

As a result of the run, Pilot Point leaped past Celina (13-7, 6-4) into second place in the district and, as evidenced by the 17-7 win over Van Alstyne (11-3, 8-2), was playing much better baseball at the end of the season than the first-place Panthers.

In baseball Sinton will be playing Zapata in the playoffs sometime this week. It may be the best of three or a one time shot. It may be a home and home type thing because last year when we played Zapata they chose to flip for the home field advantage so someone may have to do some traveling.

I was wrong on the second game in a prior post on the Pearsall - Mathis game. Mathis won the second game 9 - 8 as Pearsall rallied to tie it up late. A great series by two great teams and all three games were decided by one run and the last two went into extra innings. The final game was decided by an error which usually is the case when two good evenly matched teams play.
