Kris Boyd is looking to make a big impact heading into his senior season at the University of Texas.
The Gilmer native is garnering plenty of preseason attention to go with that.
Boyd, a senior defensive back for the Longhorns, was named to the 2018 watch list for the Jim Thorpe Award, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame announced on Monday. The award is presented to college football’s top defensive back.
Boyd, who was named to the preseason All-Big 12 team this past week, played in all 13 games for the Longhorns, with 12 starts, in 2017. Boyd finished with 57 tackles, fifth-best on the team, with two interceptions and 15 passes broken up, the most for a Longhorn since 2011.
During his career, Boyd has 20 starts in 37 games played with 121 total tackles (89 solo), three interceptions, 22 PBUs, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
The Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, established in 1986, is based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character. The winner will be selected from three finals on Dec. 6.
