It is nice that 214,000 is second lowest...I think it being so close to Christmas hurt the 3rd party football fan attendance.

Not that much of a difference when you consider the circumstances NRG had to deal with, and the fact that DFW fans don't travel as well as Houston fans. About a 47000 difference and 35000 of those were no shows from the north. LOL

TV hurts attendance. Tough to go more than one day with tickets, parking, and concessions when they're mostly all on TV.

Exactly, no need for me to drive 4 hours to Dallas to watch when I can watch on my own time from my couch.

Attendance gap between Houston and Dallas isn’t quite what I thought it would be.

Here's the total numbers from 2011-2017 (11 man only)

2016: 235,311
2015: 156,143
2014: 250,652

I also did some research and posted it on twitter that actually validates the UIL's stance that for the teams playing in the title games AT&T is the most central of the 3 potential locations...

researched from 2011-2017 and all 7 years AT&T was the closes stadium based on the mileage from the participating schools...Houston was second 4 times and San Antonio was second 3 times

Most central among those three means nothing. No rotation means a central point in the entire state of Texas. Maybe Elza can get her NFL hero to build a stadium somewhere around Austin. Wonder how long that honeymoon will last now that the grand kids are growing up and packing for college. The price of ATT is about go up I'll bet. LOL

I think we already hit "Peak Football" and are now on the downslope. It remains to be seen whether the young guys going into football coaching today will still have a job 30 years from now. I'd say it's a risky career bet.

I dont know if we'll ever top 2014 again....unless the games got taken off TV I just dont see it..and the games being taken off TV is unlikely...I think as long as attendance is around 200,000 total for the eleven man games (20k avg) the UIL will be happy...if they ever dip below 200k eyebrows will be raised...

Curious why you wish the games weren’t on tv?

Because I want people to go to the games...society in general is lazy and looks for the easy way out...so the fence riders who might consider going get duped into staying home and watching the games instead of showing up.....I dont like any HS Football games being televised live...the schools dont benefit from TV, they only benefit if there are rear ends in the seats buying tickets

I would have thought schools that get broadcast on tv, especially before the state championship games, would get some kind of payment out of it.

Matthew328
12-26-2017, 01:21 PM
The schools only benefit financially if someone purchased the TV rights...and even then the contracts for State are nominal at best....I do think for state the schools get a cut on broadcast rights but its a much smaller cut than what they get from the gate....I don't think anyone pays for rights in any round prior to the title games

Simply couldn’t make a trip like that work thus year.

Viewership was also down on NCAA football this year. It’s not just a NFL issue I don’t think. I think football is declining in popularity but it was in a bubble the last 5-10 years

Interesting that MLB viewership and the current pace for NBA viewership both being up.

Eh, I consider myself to be in the fringe group who decided against it. I thought about going but decided against all the logistics headaches and extra costs associated with driving, hotel, tickets, parking, etc.

If it had been in Houston, I would’ve went at least 2 days.

Since it was in dallas, I just watched on tv instead. If it hadn’t been televised, I doubt I would have jumped through the hoops to go but I can’t really say if I would have because it was never a serious thought knowing it was on tv,

I have driven to Dallas 2 times in the past couple years though.

I have a friend who normally flies down from Seattle and we go together. This year, that would have meant him flying back home on Sunday, 12/24. Not only was his wife/family not OK with that, but the cheapest plane ticket was something like $800 for that day.

So neither of us went. We'll go next year if I'm healthy.

I think that one day makes a huge difference because of the holidays. People have things to get done, travel, etc. the day before Christmas Eve. Personally, I would like to see the season moved back a week if the championship Saturday falls later than the 22nd of December.

Now that you mentioned the year, I remember. Gilmer played their championship game against Wylie at Ford Stadium in 2009. The next year is when 4A championship games began to be played at Jerry's World. 2A and 3A games began playing there a year later. I think 1A (6-man) games started there either this year or last.

I like the fact that they televise them. I wasn't able to be there in person in 2014, and it was sure nice being able to see them. I was there in 2015, 2016, and 2017 however, and I preach to those that ask me about them, that it's an awesome experience. It's not really astronomically expensive, especially if you carpool each day. I mean, I was sitting in seats that would run around $2000 on Sunday, and I saw a lot better football games than Dallas would have played.

I also don't agree that they should be played anywhere else other than AT&T stadium. It's not about the fans, it's about the kids. Let them play on the biggest stage in the state of Texas, and arguably the biggest football stage in the country. There is no nicer stadium. Plus, even though I cannot stand JJ (huge Cowboys fan though), he's a very adamant advocate for high school football.

Simple solution. Black out the games within 150 miles of DFW. Since the UIL refuses to rotate the games they SHOULD be on TV for the rest of the state. If DFW HS fans can't keep enough rear ends in the seats that's too bad, but they got what they wanted.
