I was just waxing nostalgic with some old 'buddies' about this. So, to save a sob-fest, sentimental farewell tomorrow:

orbit05 has signed off.

Forever.

I tried, too. AOL said there was suspicious activity on my account and I needed to reset my password. I tried, and they said they could not process the request. I suppose that's curtains for my AIM days.

AIM - wow that brings back some memories... lots of changes in the last 10-15 years.... I still remember dialing into AOL - "you've got Mail" that was 95 or 96 I guess

It was. That was back when there was a box of AOL Discs at EVERY checkout counter in EVERY grocery store. AOL rode their wave of success well into the early 2000s. My friends and I used AIM all the way through college. AIM truly did set the stage for modern social media.

ICQ was really the first one..AIM and yahoo messenger was how I used to talk to many other media folks back in the day before texting and then FB and twitter

You're right. ICQ was a little less than a year ahead of the official release of AIM. But ICQ missed out on a lot of things, and AIM bridged the gap in those shortcomings and became ubiquitous amongst late Gen-X'ers and the Pre-Millenials (of which I fall into).

I did officially, however, use MSN messenger before AIM. But that was only because the girl of my dreams had that at the time and not AIM.

On my drive home yesterday, I saw a massive Gateway box on the side of the road. About as useful and valuable there as anywhere, to be honest.

Wow. The countless hours I spent sending pointless IMs, especially to all the good looking women in class. Boy life was easy then.

I use to think I was the MAN talking to like 6 girls at once. Sometimes I would have so many conversations going at once I would have to hit the ugliest one with a "BRB" and not talk to her the rest of the night.. Sacrifices...
