They are a confusing bunch...the kind that will reach up & grab 'ya 'cause you have already dismissed them...but, being out of school this week, the guys will be spending a lot of time together...I say they will be concentrating on them & will be ready

7PM in Sulphur Springs...don't know who is home yet

Caddo Mills is sneaky athletic on both sides of the ball. They have decent speed, too, and a pretty salty little running back. But they have no passing game whatsoever, or, they didn't when Celina played them. So, they may come out fired up and give the Buckeyes fits for a quarter, but beyond that, Gilmer likely puts this one away early. Probably an easier matchup than the first-round, to be honest.

What kinda shape they in? As you know...like to see those hands on the hips by 3rd qtr, then the train pulls out of the station...our defense is gelling now and by 4th...

They’re not in terrible shape, but they have no depth. Lots of two-way kids. It hurt them against Celina. The Bobcats - who don’t play anyone both ways, except in particular packages - eventually just wore down the Foxes. They’re not pushovers, by any means, but I just don’t think they’ll have the horses to keep up with the Buckeyes.

But if Gilmer is still struggling to stop the run, then the Foxes may keep this close for a quarter or two.

I must admit that the Buckeye defense was non-existent against the run, or anything else for that matter, for most of the season. It seems they are getting it figured out, but they still regress occasionally. They are getting stops more regularly now. Now, if only they would learn to tackle lower, and stop trying to tackle the ball. Secure the tackle first, and let the help strip the ball.

It used to be that the Buckeyes would step on a team's throat and throttle them, but that doesn't seem to be the MO of this year's team. They still know how to win, but they seem to be making it a habit of letting the other team stay in the game. We need that killer instinct back.

I don't think Caddo Mills will hang around for very long in this one, but it could happen if we don't show that killer instinct we used to seeing in Gilmer teams.

Ten years ago, we played unheralded Mabank in the second round on a cold, windy rain at SFA.

They hung around the whole game and lost by a TD, 35-28. Of course, Mabank DID have a passing attack.

If the Buckeyes do indeed have a killer instinct this year, they better find it this week, and Caddo Mills is the right kind of team to do that against. Gilmer will have chances to put the Foxes away early. But if they let Caddo Mills hang around for too long and start to think they can pull the upset, then this game will be much closer than it needs to be.

We actually need an easier game than what we've been seeing because we are banged up pretty good. I'm hoping we secure the win a little earlier this week so the injured players can get a few extra plays off.

I'll admit I know almost nothing about Caddo Mills, but judging by some of their earlier games against 3A-D1 teams, their schedule seems like it was pretty weak. That really doesn't mean much except that we "should" win. We better prepare like they are a very good team that is capable of beating us because if we don't the game will be much tougher than it needs to be. Who knows, if we let them hang around long enough they might pull the upset, so it's imperative that we come out ready to ball.

I'm pretty sure the game we're talking about was the one against Mabank when Browning was their QB. We played Jasper twice in '09. The first game of the season was in Nac. It wasn't cold, but it was a little wet. The second meeting was in TMF / Rose Stadium in bi-district. Of course we won both games convincing, and went on to win another state championship with Stump as our QB.

Stump was fun to watch. It helped that the 2009 Buckeyes could play a decent brand of defense, too. They gave up some points, but all to really, really good teams, and even some of those came in scrap time.

Stump was about as special a player as you will see. He was a competitor, very skilled, and very heady. He always had a grasp on the situation in any game, and would take a game over in a heartbeat. I miss his skill set. He always seemed to know exactly what to do and when to do it, whether it be drop a ball perfectly into a receiver's arms at 50 yards, throw a 30-yard zinger on a line into tight coverage perfectly, or take off running to get the first down and more. I think he was the best overall QB we've ever had at Gilmer, and that's saying something with the likes of Derek McKenzie (Poppy's older brother), G.J. Kinne, Luke Turner, Tanner Barr, and McLane Carter to compare to. Yes, the defense was definitely good enough in them days to get enough stops for us to overcome other teams' offensive prowess.

You brought back some fond memories. Poppy is good in his own right. He's not the prototypical QB because of his height, but he can still run and pass with the best of them. I don't think Poppy has the supporting cast the previous QBs had, though. Who knows, they may be good enough, though. We'll see.

Stump was a killer. Kris Boyd was a killer. DeMarco Boyd was a killer. Manuel Johnson was a killer.

All of these dudes could just flat out take over a game at a moment's notice, and did just that on several occasions. They wouldn't be beat. They wouldn't be denied. When they saw the chance for the kill, they took it, and there wasn't anything that was going to stop them. Gilmer, this year, from what I've seen, just doesn't have a killer on the roster. And, yet, the talent is such that they still might make it all the way.

Poppy is that guy. He has the heart of a lion. He hates losing and he could very well carry us farther than I think we will go. The problem is he just doesn't have quite the supporting cast. If we get beat it will not be because Poppy Brown did not give way more than his 100%

Haha..., there are some of those in every crowd. That's why I sit where I sit. I don't want to be having to tell people to shut up with the negativity.

Poppy does have the heart of a lion, and I'll have to agree that the supporting cast he has is not nearly what we've had in the past. The other side of the ball is what will determine how far we go.

Oh for sure...it's always fun when they aren't your fans. Last year at a Sinton game...we had a group of fans calling for a QB change. It was rather embarrassing. I guess having 2 capable QBs is a blessing and a curse. QB2 transferred and isn't even playing QB at his new school so I'm not real sure what that accomplished lol

I have always thought Poppy Brown should've been the QB in 2015, and at times this season I thought maybe it was time to let Cade Camp get some reps at QB if Poppy was going to continue to turn the ball over, so I know where those particular fans are coming from. This would've been Poppy's third season if he had started his sophomore year, and I think that experience would've helped him. Poppy was pushing way too hard at times last season and earlier this season. He seems to have settled down a little and is not forcing the ball nearly as much. It seems like a little light went off in his head about 3 or 4 weeks ago. He seems to be using his legs more if the play starts breaking down, instead of forcing the ball into coverage. Even through all of the questioning, he still has a competitive fire to win. We've won all but 4 games out of 26 games he has started, even though our defense has been subpar. The defense has started playing much better as of late so that should help him tremendously.

I think Jeff Traylor would have named him starter as a sophomore just as he did with Stump. I think the new regime is more skittish in terms of playing sophomores and freshmen and alway leans heavily toward keeping them on their usual chronological teams to get them more playing time.

I believe you're right. There's a lot of talent in the freshman and sophomore classes that could be used and developed on the varsity level. There were quite a few freshmen and sophomores that got a lot of PT when Jeff was HC. Talent is talent, no matter what class they're in.
