Don Williams picks up 9 on first down after a touchback on the kickoff. Now Williams for another 8 yds. Cale Nanny picks up a couple and that's the end of the quarter. Looks like Don Williams may already have right at 100 yds rushing in the first quarter.
End of 1st.

Argyle to start of the 2nd quarter now......pass complete to Soph. Alex Gonzales for a first down on that inside screen.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 07:44 PM
Jon Copeland goes deep to Cale Nanny and he's all over his back at the 5 yd line. Interference there by Lovejoy may have saved a TD. Now from the 36, Copeland hits Nanny as he takes it down to the 12 yd line.

Kickoff to Lovejoy as they return it past 20, but a penalty backs it up to their own 10. A loss on first down as Argyle has Lovejoy is now backed up to its own 6 yd linie.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 07:53 PM
Collins back to pass and a flag on that pass for interference......the ball was not going to be caught. This gives Lovejoy a first down that they really needed. Now a zoom sweep by the Leopards is met by Argyle's defense for another loss. 2nd and 13 as Lovejoy calls a timeout.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 07:56 PM
2nd a 16 for Lovejoy......a screen pass attempt as Gage Campbell hammers Collins for another loss. 3rd and 20 now. Colllins completes it for 15 yds. but it will be 4th and 5 and force a punt by Lovejoy. The punt goes out of bounds at Argyle 43.

Copeland has trouble with the snap and just falls on it. Now he's a pass to Wes McCollum......he was wide open and takes it down the Eagles 12 yd. line. Pass to Chase Estrada on a flag route to the corner for another Argyle TD. Point is good.

Argyle 35
Lovejoy 14

57 yds in 3 plays on that drive took one minute off the clock

Lovejoy returns it out to the 40 on that kickoff return. Good return. Collins completes it on first down.....the Argyle defender tried to step in front and intercept it. 2nd and 4 for Lovejoy now.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 08:04 PM
Rainey for no gain on that run. 3rd and 4 now for the Leopards. He's a big running back. Penalty takes it back 5 yds. Now it's 3rd and 9 for Lovejoy. Pass was overthrown at the sideline. 4th down from the Lovejoy 49 now.

regaleagle

Lovejoy in punt formation at their own 49. Punt goes off the side of the foot.....it goes only about 7 yds. Argyle has it on their own 41 yd line.

Argyle 42
Lovejoy 14

4 plays for 32 yds. in 50 secs.

Halftime

Argyle scored 6 TD's in 7 possessions in the first half. Lovejoy has no answer defensively to stop this Eagle attack.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 08:23 PM
A couple of bad punts by Lovejoy did not help their cause......Argyle capitalized with a short field on both possessions and scored. Argyle scored 3 TD's in each quarter in the first half.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 08:36 PM
Not sure what adjustments the Lovejoy coaching staff will make at halftime to stop this Argyle offensive juggernaut......but they need to do something different. I'm certain Coach Rodgers and his staff will have plenty of adjustments for the Argyle defense. Lovejoy has a very potent offense......they are very capable offensively. Looks like Argyle kind of shut them down in the 2nd qtr. though.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 08:50 PM
Lovejoy scored in one play on their very first possession, but only had 18 yds. rushing in the first half. Argyle's offense is well-balanced with about 378 total yds. in the first half. The kickoff for the 2nd half is a touchback. Lovejoy will take it now at their own 25 yd line.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 08:51 PM
First down on a gain of 11 yds on that running play for Lovejoy. He carried a couple of Eagles on his back on that run.....he's so big and strong.

regaleagle

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 08:57 PM
2nd and 10 from the Argyle 19, Collins throws it to Von Waggoneer.....it goes off his hands in the air and Braydon Pruett intercepts it. He runs it back to the Argyle 30 for the first turnover of the game.

Argyle throws a pass good for 8 yds on first down.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 08:58 PM

09-02-2017, 09:01 PM
Now Copeland throws a perfect pass to Cale Nanny 45 yds on a line but it goes right thru Nanny's hands.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:02 PM
3rd and 15 from the 41, Copeland throws it to the tight end incomplete. That pass was there also. Now Clearman punts it rugby style into the end zone for a touchback. Lovejoy will take over on its 25 now.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:03 PM
Collins hits Von Waggoner for 8 yds.....2nd and 2 now.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:05 PM
Lovejoy has gone to the empty backfield and is now throwing it every play. First down on that pass by Collins. 1st down at their own 39.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:06 PM
3rd and 3 now for Lovejoy.....Collins is a lefty quarterback. Another first down on that pass to Von Waggoner.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:07 PM
Rainey reverses field and takes it all the way down to the Argyle 38, but a flag down for holding against the Leopards on that play will bring that big gain back.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:08 PM
First and 16 now from that spot foul...... a gain of 4 yds. 2nd and 12, Collins is intercepted by Jake Sullivan over the middle for the Argyle safety. He's a sophomore.

Noah Lang picks up 9 yds on that run for Argyle on first down.

regaleagle

Argyle is now slowing their offense down and burning clock. Another carry by Lang for 6 yds across midfield for a first down.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:11 PM
Now Lang again on the carry, but hit at the LOS by Bumper Pool for no gain.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:13 PM
Looks like Lang is getting his reps in for Williams right now.......he's a good runner. Now Copeland is sacked at the Argyle 38 yd. line. That's the last play of the quarter.

End of 3rd.....same score.

Argyle 42
Lovejoy 14

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:14 PM
4th down and long as Clearman is standing on his own 23 to punt this ball. Punt goes out of bounds at the Lovejoy 25 yd line......a 62 yd punt.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:16 PM
Rainey picks up 16 yds on that carry......he fumbled it but he was already down. Now a 6 yd loss by the Eagles. 2nd and 16 as Chase Petter is credited with the loss.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:21 PM
Alex Gonzales is part of that group that went 68-3 since Junior high. He's a sophomore this season.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:22 PM
6 minutes left in this game.....Argyle is slowly driving it with runs and short passes. Lang is given the ball twice in a row with short gains. Now a field goal attempt from 31 yds out by lefty Travis Garner. It's wide left with a little draw on it. That was from the right hashmark.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:24 PM
Collins throws it deep from his own 20 yd line, but it is incomplete. Less than 5 minutes left now. Argyle is playing a soft defense now.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:26 PM
Clock is running and Lovejoy is in no hurry at all. Now it's like a scrimmage for both teams. In the big picture, this game is nondistrict and really does not matter.......but Argyle has looked very impressive. Now a 64 yd pass to Terwilliger goes to the house on a missed tackle. The extra point is good.

Argyle 42
Lovejoy 21

4 mins. left

4 plays and 80 yds on that series for Lovejoy. They can score quickly.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:29 PM
Perhaps Argyle should try to pass the ball more now to get some first downs, Huh?

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:30 PM
Nope.....still running it every down now. 3rd and 7 now. Copeland throws it to Lang, but only for about a yard. Argyle will punt it again.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:32 PM
Clearman will punt it again......only a couple of minutes left now in the game. Now the punt it muffed and recovered by the center Scotty Dunham. It bounced off the defender that had called for the fair catch.

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:33 PM

regaleagle
09-02-2017, 09:35 PM
Lang breaks a tackle in the backfield and fights for yardage to make the first down. Only 49 secs. left now.....that should do it. Here comes the victory formation as Copeland takes a knee. Argyle wins the opener for these schools in the final game of the Tom Landry Classic tonite.

It certainly appears that way. Argyle looked - and largely was - unstoppable against Lovejoy. Eagles could be on a collision course with Carthage at Texas Stadium in a few months.

I sure hope so. It would definitely make for another good Championship game in 4a

Seems like quite a few of the better teams in most classifications put up some good offensive numbers to start the season. Why do you think this happens??? Probably because it's easier to score on defenses early in the season than it is when they finally mesh as a defensive unit. What does this really mean? It means it's too early to get all keyed up over just the season opener......regardless of the competition. Obviously, Argyle's offense looked unstoppable......but so did alot of other teams offenses in class 4A to start the season. The big question is what about Argyle's defense this season against a very good offense? From the boxscore, it appears that Lovejoy was too much one-dimensional in the passing game, and that made it easier for the Argyle defense. Not saying Argyle is not a very good football team......just saying it's too early to say that with full certainty. There are plenty of things the coaches saw that need some work. It's a natural tendency to rate a team highly that has had so much success in the past. Let's give the players a chance to prove themselves worthy first. Good first game win.......against what we believe will be a fairly good team.......that's all it was.

Of course there are certain things that need improvements on, seen several myself. But this team is so much further ahead then I've seen in the past. The scary part is when they do start clicking on all cylinders. Argyle is a very dangerous team with several weapons on both sides of the ball. Going to be a fun season to watch.

Seeing things that need work and deciding whether or not a team is 'very good' or not are two separate things.

Does Argyle have things they need to work on? Of course. Every single team in the state has things they need to work on. And that sentence will be as true today as it will be for those few, those happy few, who play at Texas Stadium in December. That has zero bearing on whether or not we have the ability to project Argyle as a very good team, even an elite team. We can't project their final landing place this season, of course, but we can say, with certainty, that they are a very good team.
