Wharton didn't go far to find its new athletic director and head football coach.

Wharton offensive coordinator Chad Butler was promoted to the position by the Wharton school district board of trustees on Tuesday night.

Butler will replace Tim Finn, who resigned earlier this month to become the head football coach and campus athletic coordinator at Baytown Lee.

"The Wharton ISD looks forward to a successful transition as Chad Butler works to continue the many successes of the Wharton Tiger athletic program," Wharton superintendent Tina Herrington said in a statement.

Wharton received 40 applications for the position before selecting Butler, according to Herrington.

Butler has been the Tigers' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Finn for the past five seasons.

He previously coached at Texas City, Alvin, Deer Park and Spring. He has 17 years of coaching experience.

Wharton went 40-20 during Finn's tenure and advanced to the Class 4A, Division II regional playoffs last season before finishing with an 8-5 record.

Butler has served as the acting head coach since Finn's departure.
