View Full Version : Burnet vs. Wharton

This should be a VERY close and hardfought game. Burnet and Wharton both have balanced offenses, and pretty good defenses. This will be the best team Burnet has played this season, so they really need to protect the football and execute to near perfection, to win this game. What are some other opinions on this contest?

I agree this will be a tough task for Burnet. From here on out, all the games are tough ones. The Wharton team is very talented, The Dawgs better not overlook this team or they will regret it. Go Get em Bulldogs!!!

Wharton has size and speed, but not much dicipline. If they come to play Burnet will definitly have their hands full.

This is going to be a very good game.Wharton going to have to put a lot of pressure on the burnet qb and get him to hurry up his passes.I really don't know a whole lot about burnet other than they beat austin reagan.I would like to say that whartons defense is giving up a lot of yds bettween the 20's but when it comes down to the red zone they are very tough. As far as speed wharton is by far the fastest team in region 3& 4.in class 3a.

I think probably Jasper is the fastest between Region 3 and 4, and Sinton is no slouch in that department either.

bc76, if you think Wharton is the fastest team in region 3 and region 4, then I guess you don't know a lot about Burnet.

Sorry Burnet but if you ask me Wharton is probably the fastest team in R4....they are really an extremely talented team but this isn't a track meet! Even without their star RB Washington...too bad he isn't playing or this game would come down to the wire..but since he is out Burnet should pull away late..but if Burnet isn't on its game especially on D it'll be a barn burner!

Wharton's defense held Tommy Blake to about 19 yds in their game with Aransas Pass early in the season. Wharton will be very tough for Burnet to run against. Burnet will have to beat them in the air game. McGee and Shipley are an awesome combination in that department. Should be a great game. I'm going with Burnet by 14.

Burnet can run on Wharton and will. Burnet spreads out their offense too much for any team to shut them down.

Old Dog, seems that Mr. Washington did not make the grades that he needed to continue to play. UIL rules, don't ya know. Sure wish he could be there, would like to see both teams at full strength. That way there would be NO excuses from either team. Good luck to both. Look for Burnet to win by 14.

BC, are those guys really that big or are you just BS-ing? That is an impressive line up. I guess we'll just have to put our own Eddie Parker to the test- he is one huge dude. Don't underestimate Burnet--they aren't underestimating Wharton, I'll tell you that!

HotDawg 89 wharton is really that big & fast. But in order for us to win we are going to have to play a perfect game against burnet. This is by far the best team we have played this year. But we feel that we can win,we have the athletes on defense to do it,and the speed on offense to score on burnet.Just like in any playoff game the team that makes the fewest turnovers will win this game.Good luck to both teams this has the making of being a very good game.

I did a little research. Wharton has talent and speed. They are good. After my research, I think Burnet will by 14+. Burnet might just show how diversified they are. Wharton could force that.

Burnet's a very strong team. Shipley is dynamic in all phases of the game. Burnet will win Region 4. Head Coach Bob Shipley was a D-1 type fullback in the late 70's. Like tackling a bull, I tried plenty.

wharton is the real deal. they have the biggest defensive front I've ever seen. Their skill kids are very very very good. Burnet will have to play a great ball game to win. I do wonder how the big boys up front play late in the game. Do they wilt or can they play 48 minutes of football?

Hey thats ok Killien Shoemaker was probably a more talented team than us but we beat them because we were better prepared and wanted it more. I admit looking at their roster last night they are bigger and faster than us. But thats nothin new for us we built our pre-district with teams that were more talented than us and these teams wanted to win. If wharton wants to beat us which im sure they want to and their preparing for us they have to be in better shape than they are right now and they have to be better disiplined. No offense Wharton im not trying to start a fight here im just being a critic everybodys one. :D

As a varsity players mom, this should be a great game. I'm sure both teams are ready to win. Yes Burnet has had a great year, and I'm sure the rest of the year will be as good if not greater. This group of boys have the strength and endurance to take on any of the teams in our region. If you didn't see any of our preseason games then you missed a great deal of passion these boys have for football. Its not going to be a game of strength or endurance, since both teams seem to have this, its going to be who wants to win more!

Burnet is very deserving of the number one ranking i will give them that. But they have not played anybody since the overtime win against marlin. The win against austin reagan was also impressive but that was the first game of the year.Wharton 4 losses a very misleading they are peaking at the right time and burnet is due for a bad game.If you want to compare wharton to any team i would say they are marlin & austin reagan, but faster & bigger.

29x281
11-20-2002, 09:56 PM
It's true. Wharton is the bigger, faster team. They're peaking at the right time. Their DL looks like the danged Miami Hurricanes. Their town is pumped up for their first playoff run in quite a while. Their QB is experienced and composed, and they have one of the best coaches in Texas.

Burnet 49
Wharton 20

Specklebelly
11-20-2002, 10:07 PM
Peaking at the right time? Wharton is riding a 1 game winning streak. D line like Miami? Nope. Fact is that Wharton is playing this game without their best player due to his failure to draw good enough and Burnet is one of the best teams in the state. I would love to see Wharton pull it off but I just don't see that happening.

Burnet 45
Wharton 21

Points ARE going to become tougher to get! Not gona tell you anything you don't already know, but by next week all of the marginal teams will be playing basketball and the number of points being scored by most teams will be going down. You will have quality guys lined up across from each other in every position and that's when desire, heart and good coaching will really become paramount. Conditioning will also be apparent (talent alone won't cut it). Man, this is really exciting! Sorry, got carried away.

I don't know but this Wharton team sounds pretty impressive. If their star running back was playing i would be even more scared. Things seem all to wierd to me. Last year we played at dragon stadium at 1:00 with cloudy condions while UMHB was playing in trinity at trinity. We lost! This year we are playing a big fast team which reminds me a little of Belville, it is going to be at dragon stadium, at 1:00 with cloudy conditions, and UMHB is playing trinity at trinity. Now if this sounds like dejavu to you it should. I hope that i don't see the same outcome. Especially if we are on the two yardline with a chance to win and get screwed by the refs again i will be angry. I think this is going to be a good game. I will come down to burnet's young o-line in the interior against some huge d-tackles. If they can hold their own they will have a good chance of winning. Good luck bulldogs!

Well i promised i wouldnt get in here again....but....as the mom of an offensive liner.. Burnet has a good chance of doing this all over again the next 2 years. The kids coming up will be together again, like they have been since 7th grade, and might I add they never lost a game until they were seperated this year when some of the big guys were moved up to varsity. They have learned a lot from the seniors, and plan on passing it on in the next couple of years. So I would say enjoy what you other schools have this year, because Burnet is gonna LET THE DAWGS OUT for at least a couple more years. I think the Wharton game is going to be a close one, but it just all depends on who wants to win MORE!!!! These boys have worked hard all year and as I see it.....YOU AINT SEEN NOTHIN YET..

I attended the Bulldog Pep Rally last night at the stadium. This was the best Pep Rally I've seen so far!!! The whole community was there. From the Mayor to all the little brother's and sister's. All of the pep talks were inspirational and the tribute to the parents and grandparents was really classy. After talking to some of the Bulldogs you can't help but admire thier humble attitudes. As Coach Shipley said they may not show a lot of emotion outside of the football field but when they do step on the field all of that changes. We keep hearing about how BIG Wharton's guys are but we have something even better. We have the BIG MEAN GREEN BULLDOGS!!!
If you want it guys go out there and take it!!!

I too attended the pep rally last night and can say that these Bulldogs are a very focused group of men. They go out and take care of business and are willing to take on anyone, anytime. Burnet has a very good football team ! A good offense needs a good o-line and they have it, a good offense needs a good receiving corps and a good qb and backfield, they have it. A good offense needs a good defense, they have it. Attitude is everything !!

In all the Burnet talk, not much has been said about the advantage the Bulldogs have in the kicking game. Templeton regularly puts his kickoffs into the back of the end zone and sometimes out. I think he is a darn good asset and our punter (Ham) is consistant and gets good distance. They sure help the the defense get better field position.

I will give you a little highlights on wharton they spread the field very much and they send out 4 to 5 receivers out at one time and yes they can fly.I also saw them dropped about 6 passes against navasota and 3 of those was dropped for tds.I know everyone is talking about mr. washington he's in college now and i let you in on another rb and his name is huddson.I really think he is better than washington and much better runner. The qb for wharton has a very good arm,but it doesn't matter if the rec. don't hold on to the ball. The defense is very big,but they seem to get tired very fast and what i hear that the bulldawgs has a good qb and wr.I would like to be at that game, but i'm still trying to decide on the game with Rice and Wimberly. eek!
