Sweetwater came to play. The second quarter will tell a lot more about the dynamic of this game, however.

Took until :29 left in the half for WOS to score. Defensive struggle so far. Sure has been a quiet first half over here on the WOS side. People are in shocked disbelief.

Maybe that other team is better than you thought.

d0tc0m
12-16-2016, 02:20 PM
Sweetwater played about as well as they could, defensively, in that first half, and they're still trailing. They're going to have to find a way to score some points in the third quarter and weather some second-half WOS adjustments. One thing is fore sure, the Mustangs in Red did not come in intimidated whatsoever. I think we're clearly seeing the two best teams in 4A Div. II go at it here.

Sweetwater is going to have to win this game on the arm of the qb there run d is very good but pass d not the best from what I have seen so far wos amazing defensive numbers so far may have been because almost all the teams they have played were heavy run teams

Coach Thompson: "We're not playing real good."

Yep. I know for a fact they're good. I just thought the way everybody was talking that WO-S was on a whole other level. I guess it just goes to show that there is more of a difference between the northern half of Texas and the southern half this year. You never really know how teams from different regions stack up against each other.

With that said, I am a little surprised, but not shocked, that Sweetwater is this close. I do "think" WO-S will win, but it ain't gonna be as easy as they thought.

Aesculus gilmus

Right now it is 74 degrees in Sweetwater and only 65 in Orange. But that's still way warmer than Gilmer where it is 49.

Crazy Texas weather.

WOS kicks a FG.

10-6 WOS.

Saggy Aggie
12-16-2016, 02:51 PM
Yeah an extra point and fg could have been a 10-10 game....

You can't sit here and tell me that there's not a guy on that team capable of kicking a 20 yard fg....

Sweetwater starting to make some really boneheaded mistakes.

regaleagle
12-16-2016, 03:05 PM
Their clock management on that series toward the end of the 1st half allowed enough time for Stark to score.

regaleagle
12-16-2016, 03:06 PM
Jack Dallas has a very accurate arm on the run.....but the Stark recievers make him look good too.

WOS has badly injured the opposing QB for the second year in a row. I'd say Poppy dodged a bullet.

Took three quarters, though, this time. They broke Pingleton's arm on the first series of downs last year.

There wasn't a big hit on Pingelton. He jumped over a kid and broke his arm while bracing for the fall.

WOS offense isn't really anything that will blow you away. But Jack Dallas is pretty special. And the defense is really, really good. Very quick, very good tacklers and very disciplined. They bring the wood on just about every snap.

Sweetwater has probably had something to do with that. But I wasn't impressed with it last year, though, either. Granted, they're probably better this year. But without Jack Dallas last season, Celina might've won that game 3-0.

It really would've taken a really, really good, fine-tuned offense to beat them, though. That defense is truly something special. Very fun to watch. Quickness and discipline at every position. No glaring weak spots.

I didn't see one this year, in all honesty. There might be some defenses that could hold the WOS offense down, but I haven't seen a 4A offense that could have consistent success against this year's chain gang unit.

Agree to disagree

They gave up 60 something points on the season, more than half of those coming in garbage time and opposing team defensive TDs like today. They completely dismantled a prolific offense today.

LionFan72

Awesome to see the emotion on Jack Dallas! What a career by that young man! Well done, WOS. You had a target on your back all year long and you more than lived up to the hype.

Speed on WOS defense to much, best shot to attack it would be a passing game. Sweetwater had some bright spots offensively but WOS defense has to be one of the best defenses in 4a/3a history.

The better team was there. Sweetwater did good defensively -- better than we could've, in my opinion. When our offense is clicking and not turning the ball over, we can score some points. We lived or died via the pass this year, even when the other team couldn't stop our running game. Sweetwater pulled a Gilmer, and had multiple turnovers. You can't do that against a team as good as WO-S. WO-S was the real deal on defense, pitching a shutout against a potent Sweetwater offense. No doubt about it.

The score doesn't show, but it was an entertaining defensive battle. WOS is always a second half dominator. Sweetwater got pumped when the picked up the fumble on the first possession and ran it for a TD. At the same time, it was demoralizing for WOS. Prior to that, WOS was moving and Sweet water did not have an answer. After that, Sweetwater played their hearts out. But, in the end, it was not enough. It happens, especially in high school ball.

Congrats to WOS on winning another state championship. The defense was everything that they were built up to be and definitely rock solid. Sweetwater's defense played a great game as well...they bent some but didn't really break. They definitely appeared tired later in the 4th quarter...but that had a lot to do with the WOS defense keeping our offense off the field.

Congrats to the Mustangs in Red and the "Sea of Red" Sweetwater fans that filed 2 levels from zone to zone! I saw a post that the attendance for the game was over 17,000. Great turnout from both communities.

I really enjoyed my interview with Coach Thompson (class act and genuinely great person) and thanks to WOS87 for helping me with some information and Mrs. Thompson for helping too.

Update of Sweetwater QB Chris Thompson was preliminary torn ACL. He is a great competitor and will be back next year and will be stronger, faster and smarter. I agree with the other posts that it was not a dirty or intentional hit. I did not get a great look from the sidelines due to being blocked out by players..but our crew saw it from the booth and said he had planted his foot and got hit. Unfortunate yes....but it happens in football..it just does.

Congratulations again to Coach Thompson and the WOS Mustangs on repeating as state champions.

I hope everyone made it home safely and has a Merry Christmas and Joyous New Year !!

Thanks Ted! I was there and Sweetwater definitely came to play. I've wished for that matchup to happen since the '80s. SHS was the 1985 4A Champ and WOS was the 1986 4A Champ and I thought (as a 17 year old kid) how cool would it be if two Mustangs... both Chanpions played for the State Title against each other. If Sweetwater had beaten Rockwall in the '87 Semis we'd have played for it all then. But 29 years later I got my wish. Two Champions played today.

And thanks... the drive home was horrendous but I made it. Be safe everyone who still has to travel.

Finally back in the hotel, what a game! Hats off to WOS and their fans! There were two very good teams on the field today and no matter what others try to tell themselves, those ARE the best two teams in DII. As a TXHSFB fan that game was everything we could ask for! Hated to see Thompson go down and hope he has a speedy recovery. Congratulations to the Sweetwater Mustangs. You did your community proud!

Hats off to WOS1, griff, WOS87 and the rest of the WOS Nation. Back to back titles are special. Enjoy it!

Well WOS has all of 3 starters returning next season but that's about what we had in 1987. We reload. We will definitely not be the across the board favorites in 2017 I can guarantee that lol. I promise to make a trip down to Sinton next year. Just tell me a week and maybe SK1 and 44 could join in.

"Congrats to WOS on the 3 peat! That is a rare accomplishment!"

I need a clarification. What did WOS "3 peat" in?

Gilmer won the state title in 2014. So it should be called a "repeat" unless there's been a forfeit I don't know about. The customary "second-half domination" didn't pan out two years ago for WOS.

Having sought clarification, let me add my congratulations to the thread. There was a good reason no one else in Division II really wanted to make it to the title game this year.

"With 3 State Champions yet to be crowned in 2016 here are the current all-time rankings among all 448 11-man UIL Champs crowned since 1920.
Average Margin of Victory over entire victory season"
1. Big Sandy 1975 Class B Champ 57.79
2. Aledo 2013 4A-2 Champ 55.19
3. Waco 1927 1A Champ 53.64
4. Big Sandy 1973 Class B Champ 49.57
5. Alto 2006 1A-1 Champ 49.00
6. Abilene 1923 1A Champ 47.17

Sorry for the delayed congratulations as I am just now getting a chance to jump onto the board but wow what can you say about these two great teams that has not already been said. Sweetwater you are a great team and so much to be proud of . The sea of red that covered that stadium just shows the great pride and love from your community. Now congratulations to the State Champs again and that is West Orange-Stark. I could try to use all kinds of adjectives to describe the greatness of your team but winning the State Title Back to Back and going 16-0 just does a much better job than any words I could choose. West Orange-Stark 2016 State Champions ...Congratulation!!!!!

What happened to WOS being the best conditioned team on the field? Two Mustangs have had cramps so far.

That cramp issue was puzzling. I saw several players from both sides getting leg cramps. It is not that hot. Has nothing to do with conditioning, though. That is due to fluids and electrolytes.

I was just giving you WOS boys a hard time. It's all us non-state qualifying folks can do. They were saying on the broadcast that the air inside the stadium was really dry and could've been leading to it, and leading to kids needing oxygen. I don't know if that's true or not, but I suppose it could be.

Loins, you are just a hater, which ever way you can, toward WOS. It's hard to make a 16 -0 season. Every team brings their A game against WOS, because of their winning tradition.

Sorry I stepped on your tail, but hater I am not!! I love watching the boys of fall, I was just disappointed in the WOS offensive effort. The defense was supreme and must have scored at least two touchdowns every one of those other 15 games. After all the "hype" last 10 weeks, I thought they could beat the Cowboys! Disappointed by the offensive effort doesn't make me a hater, although Sweetwater defense may have had a lot to do with that. Kudos to WOS for the repeat, amazing effort!

If you read my earlier posts, you should know my answer to this, but I will repeat. WOS took the kickoff and moved down field without a hitch, and Sweetwater had no answer. Fumble on the 1 yd line and ran for the TD, was a double edged sword. It pumped up Sweetwater and demoralized WOS. They just could not seem to get it going after that. I knew Sweetwater had a good defense, because I watched their game against Gilmer. And, after that TD, they played their hearts out. I was disappointed that WOS didn't regain their composure until the 2nd half, but that is high school football. But, no one here can take anything away from the Sweetwater Mustangs. They were well coached and athletic. But, just not up to the same level as WOS. I do think that the 2 best teams played where they were suppose to be, yesterday. Sweetwater needs to back off running the QB so much. Any back can get hurt when running, but when you lose a QB and do not have a replacement for him, you are messed up. Sweetwater did not list a second QB, and the boy that took snaps was listed as a WR/DB. WOS had 2 true back up QB's, close to the same quality of Jack Dallas. One of them is returning next year, but not sure of the other. You take back the fumble/TD and the interception of the pass that JD3 was trying to throw out of bounds, and you were probably looking at a 38-0 game. WOS defense totally dismantled a high powered offense. WOS offense also faced the toughest defense they had seen all year.

WOS offense isn't really anything that will blow you away. But Jack Dallas is pretty special. And the defense is really, really good. Very quick, very good tacklers and very disciplined. They bring the wood on just about every snap.

The WO-S offense WAS very good all year long, until the SC game. Partly due to good defensive play by Sweetwater and partly due to the two big turnovers and Jack Dallas misfiring on his throws. I thought the WO-S playcalling should have involved more rushing attempts in the first half. Too many bubble screen attempts in the first 24 minutes. Excellent defense and good special teams play helped overcome the offensive road bumps. Sweetwater was the only team that gave WO-S legitimate competition all season. It was fitting to see these two teams in the final game.

Funny how people make year long judgements based on one game. We averaged 50 points a game...

Given that only two of these teams played each other I'm guessing that he believes our game was the most impressive.

It was very warm inside the Death Star... at least down on the field. No air moving. Our kids were drenched with sweat and we busted our butts on the sideline to keep them hydrated. I know everyone loves the centralized location and all the games in a controlled atmosphere, but... we are playing football in December and the kids are conditioned to play in cooler weather over the last couple of months and in the downright cold the last couple of weeks. An athlete's body has a hard time adjusting to the tremendous change in conditions. Also really dislike the early start times for a lot of the games. 8 AM? Seriously?
I know I'm probably the only person in the state to feel this way but I really wished we could go back to the teams deciding when and where to play the championship.

you won't get any argument from me - I see pros and cons to being centralized... but 8 AM - even 10 AM... that's pretty early..... I do enjoy being able to watch on TV - with my job - taking off the last couple of weeks in December is not easy to do - so watching on TV (or online) is the only way for me Unless Cuero is playing - then I'm taking off - :)

Waco would get a whole lot more SC games.... just like the old days. Heck, we can play three of them at the same time now.

You're not the only one who feels that way. I wish they would go back to the schools choosing the playoff location too.
