COLUMBIA ROUGHNECKS (5-5) VS. NORTH FOREST BULLDOGS (7-3)

7:30 p.m. today at

Barnett Stadium, Houston

OVERVIEW: All season the Columbia Roughnecks have been unable to win three games in a row, but they can accomplish that today against North Forest in the Class 4A Division I Region III bi-district showdown. The Roughnecks having to win their final two District 12-4A games to make into the playoffs have been doing it on the ground. In those final two contests the ’Necks had 72 rushes for 707 yards with junior Keithan Taylor (24-301 yards, 12.54 per carry) and senior Saylaion Dunlap (25-138 yards) carrying the bulk of those yards. Dunlap (159-849 yards, 5.34 per carry) led the team during the season but Taylor has been coming on of late. As at team the ’Necks are averaging 335.1 yards per game with a majority of the 3,351 total offensive yards coming through the ground (2,353 yards). In a crucial game like this, Columbia has to stay away from the turnovers after losing 16 fumbles to opponents. Defensively Columbia has held in there with some pretty strong district teams giving up just 267.1 yards a game. The Columbia secondary had 10 interceptions during the regular season.

North Forest comes out of District 11 finishing first overall (6-0) and outscoring its district opponents 311-18. The Bulldogs blanked Houston Worthing in its season finale (36-0) behind the quarterbacking of Rashand Jones who threw for 259 yards and also ran for another 84. North Forest totaled 458 yards in that contest running for 199 on the ground. Freshman wide receiver Demond Demas (5-160 receiving yards, 2 TDs) is averaging 30 yards a catch this season. Silsbee or Carthage await the winner in the area round.

SWEENY BULLDOGS (6-4) VS. PORT ISABEL TARPONS (9-1)

7:30 p.m. today at

Pirate Stadium, Sinton

OVERVIEW: The Sweeny Bulldogs and Port Isabel Tarpons will meet for the second time. The first meeting was back in 1983 during a regional playoff that the Bulldogs won 13-0. The two get together again after a 32-year drought in a Region IV-4A bi-district round match up, in which the winner gets Navarro or Poteet in an area round game. Sweeny has come a ways underfirst-year coach Randy Lynch, more so in the latter part of the season as they settled into Lynch’s system and got some strong performances in a tough District 15. Fellow seniors, quarterback Evan Green (50-for-103, 885 passing yards, 5 TDs, 9 INTs; 136-761 rushing yards, 5.6 per carry, 12 TDs) and running back Donovan Banks (123-1,102 rushing yards, 9.0 per carry, 6 TDs) have a been a big part of the offense. Banks (20-323 receiving yards, 2 TDs) and Ashton Callahan (17-286, 2 TDs) are two of Green’s main targets. Defensively, the Bulldogs allowed 21 points to No. 3 ranked Cuero as well as 21 to Wharton and 14 to Sinton, who were both ranked to start the season.

Port Isabel brings in a run game that has totaled, 3,483 yards led by senior running back/quarterback Omar Silva (178-1,878 yards, 10.3 per carry, 22 TDs) and senior Carlos Orduna (101-674 rushing, 6.7 per carry, 3 TDs). When Silva is not under center, sophomore Cesar Augilera (30-for-63, 523 passing, 4 TDs, 4 INTs) will be. The Tarpons averaged 31 points a game this season.

while giving up just 15.1 points a game.
