NEEDVILLE — The Brazosport Exporters were hoping to avoid losing nine straight games to end the season, but the Needville Blue Jays and their fast-paced offense had other ideas.

After trading scores in the early part of the game, the Blue Jays exploded for 35 unanswered points as they sent the Ships home from Blue Jay Stadium with a 45-27 District 12-4A Division I loss Friday night.

The Exporters finish the year 1-9 overall and 0-6 in district.

Despite a better second-half performance by the defense, the struggling Ship offense had to play played catch-up for nearly three quarters and, aside from two scores in the second half with the game already decided, couldn’t do much.

“The effort was in the second half by our defense was better than the first,” Exporter head coach Ben Rudolph said. “We’re a tempo team, and it was kind of shocking of our defense when (Needville) came out and tried to tempo us. They rocked us back there a little bit, but we got settled down and handled it.

“We had unlucky breaks there in the first half, but we scored on the final two drives of the game, so I’m pleased with that.”

The Ships finished with 254 yards offensively, most coming from running back Ameer King.

The junior carried the ball just 12 times, but racked up 228 yards and three scores in his return from an ankle injury. Two scores were on runs of 46 and 30 yards on the final two drives of the night.

Quarterback Jarvis Davis, however, had opportunities to sling the ball around playing from behind, but finished just 5-of-19 for 14 yards despite having time to throw all night.

“I’m proud of the offensive line and they did a good job of protecting Jarvis,” Rudolph said. “Needville just dropped an extra defender in coverage and we couldn’t crack the code. We dropped some passes that really hurt and that would’ve opened it up more. The second half was us playing catch-up, but we tried to feed (King) as much as we could.”

The Ships got a boost early in the game from King’s return.

Down 3-0, King capped a six-play, 50-yard drive with a 14-yard run to give the Ships a 7-3 lead midway through the first.

After regaining the lead on a 71-yard pass from quarterback Logan Archer to Dylan Bercher to make it 10-7, the Blue Jays looked to add to their slim advantage with the ball at their own 46 following a Brazosport punt.

That would not be the case as Ships linebacker Steven Reyes picked off Archer’s third-down pass and returned it 49 yards for a pick-six and a 14-10 Brazosport lead with 1:18 left in the first quarter.

Little went the Ships’ way the rest of the half, however, as two of their next three drives ended in punts and the other with a Davis fumble. Brazosport compiled just 49 yards in the first half.
