BRAZOSPORT — With just one game left to go and out of playoff contention, there’s only thing left for the Brazosport Exporters to do and that’s avoid finishing the season with nine consecutive losses.

The Exporters could grab the second win of the season as they visit the Needville Bluejays for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday at Bluejay Stadium in the season finale.

Brazosport (0-5, 1-8) coach Ben Rudolph hopes his team can end on a high note and use their final game as a stepping stone.

“We’ve talked to our kids all week in practice about how the true mark of a man is how you finish,” Rudolph said. “We want to finish the season and send our seniors off with a victory. We want to use this game as a spring board for what we’re continuing to build here.”

The Bluejays (1-4, 5-4) have an outside shot at the postseason and will be anything but an easy out.

The defensive side of the ball is where the Blujays are at thier strongest.

On the year, Needville has given up 265 yards to opponents, which is third in the district behind Bay City and Stafford. All are playoff-bound this season.

The Blue Jays have a pair of ball hawks in their secondary as strong safety Andrew Cardiel has intercepted three passes on the season, while corner back Dylan Bercher has a pair of his own.

Brazosport’s offense, meanwhile, has struggled, averaging a district-worst 260 yards per game.

Making things tougher is the questionable status of running back Ameer King, who was sidelined with an ankle injury sustained during the loss to Bay City.

He’s still day-to-day, as is Fabian Peoples, who also has an ailing ankle.

“We’re in the process of protecting their health and well-being and we didn’t deem them playable last week,” Rudolph said. “We’re continuing to treat their injuries with daily rehabs and hopefully they’ll be able to play for us Friday.”

Last week, the Exporters felt Kings absence as their offense generated just 153 total yards of offense, with quarterback Jarvis Davis picking up the slack, passing for 104 yards and passing for 27 more.”

Needville also is in the bottom half of the district offensively, averaging 290 yards per contest, led by the quarterback dual of Sean Smith and Logan Archer.

Smith has thrown for 699 yards of the year for a pair of touchdowns on 59 -of-108 passing, while Archer has tossed 607 yards and six touchdowns on 48-of-113 passing.

Their main target is Bercher, who leads the district in receiving with 46 catches for 499 yards.

With a couple of weapons and nothing to lose, Rudolph is expecting his team to come out fired up.

“We expect them to pull out all the stops and not hide anything,” Rudolph said.

“They expect their best. It’s a good match up and it should be an exciting game. We’ll be as wide open as we can and as much as the kids can take on, we’re going to do on offense, defense or special teams.

“We want the kids to have fun, enjoy the game and come out with a win.”
